CHESTNUT HILL, MA – The Vassar men's fencing team opened Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) competition at Saturday's multimeet held at Boston College. Against the challenging competition, the Brewers went 1-4.
The sabre squad went 23-22 to lead the Brewers, with junior Evin Heintz (Pearland, TX) leading all Brewers with a 10-5 sabre record. Conor Travaglione (East Northport, NY) went 7-8, and Graeme Mills (Boston, MA) added six wins. Epee was next with 21 victories, while foil added 18. Freshman Jack Plumer (Bel Air, MD) led epee at 7-4, while Caleb Klein (Chappaqua, NY) topped the foil squad at 6-4.
Vassar opened against MIT, dropping a 12-15 decision. Each squad went 4-5 to the Engineers. Klein swept foil 3-0, while Travaglione and Heintz were 2-1 at sabre. At epee, Abram Gregory led the team with two victories.
The Brewers picked up their sole win of the day next, winning 25-2 against Tufts. Foil swept 9-0 behind another 3-0 bout win from Klein and undefeated marks by Noe Berger (Brooklyn, NY), Chris Gaehde (Brookline, MA), Adlai Brandt-Ogman (South Salem, NY), Chase Estes (Naples, FL), and Ben Papsun (North Haven, CT). Epee and sabre tabbed 8-1 records. Mills and Heintz both went 3-0, while Travaglione was 2-1. Tom Stadnikov (Sudbury, MA) swept 3-0 at epee.
Vassar fell 2-25 to Boston College in the third round, and then the Brewers dropped a 9-18 decision to Brandeis.
Vassar closed out in a hard match against Brown, losing 11-16 to the Bears. Sabre won 6-3 with 2-1 marks from Travaglione, Mills, and Heintz. Epee and foil both lost 2-7.
Vassar travels to New Haven, CT, next for a duel match against Yale on Sat. Feb. 1 at 11:30 a.m.
