BOSTON, Mass. – The Vassar men's fencing squad returned to conference action this weekend, going 4-1 at the Northeast Conference Multi-Meet #3 on Saturday. The Brewers defeated UMass (22-5), Boston University (23-4), Dartmouth (19-8) and New Hampshire (23-4), with the only loss to Sacred Heart (14-13).
Vassar opened against UMass, going 8-1 in foil, 7-2 in epee and 6-3 in sabre. In foil
Noe Berger (Brooklyn, NY) and
Chris Gaehde tallied 3-0 sweeps, and
Caleb Klein went 2-1. The epee squad saw
Nishay Bhatnagar go undefeated, while
Michael Jaklitsch and
Alden Pierson Smela went 2-1. At sabre,
Graeme Mills,
Max Deak and Nick Williams all went 2-1 against the Minutemen.
In the second round, the Brewers rolled past the Terriers. Vassar pulled off the clean sweep in foil and was 8-1 in sabre. Epee went 6-3. Berger, Gaehde and
Michael Skolnick all went undefeated.
Chase Estes also was 1-0. Jaklitsch was 3-0 to lead epee, while
Abram Gregory tacked on two wins. At sabre, Deak and
Tom Possidente were 3-0 and Mill tallied two more wins.
In round three, Vassar picked up the 19-8 win over Dartmouth, as all three squads earned victories. The foil team captured a 7-2 win after three more wins from Gaehde and two from Berger. The epee team saw the trio of Bhatnagar, Jaklitsch and Gregory go 6-3. In sabre, Deak again was perfect with a 3-0 record while Williams added two more victories.
Vassar's only loss came in a tight contest with Sacred Heart. The Brewers fell 5-4 in foil and 7-2 in epee, but performed well at sabre with a 7-2 record. Gaehde had two wins against Sacred Heart in foil, while Jaklitsch tabbed the only wins at epee. Mills recorded the 3-0 sweep at sabre to lead the squad.
The final round was all Vassar; as it saw the foil and sabre team dominate New Hampshire. Foil picked up another clean sweep with Klein, Gaehde, Skolnick and Estes all going undefeated. In epee, Bhatnage went 3-0 to help the foil team to a 6-3 triumph, while Gregory added two epee wins for the Brewers against the Wildcats. Sabre cruised to the 8-1 victory behind 3-0 performances from Williams and Deak. Possidente was also undefeated at 2-0.
Vassar now heads to New York City to face Columbia and New York on Feb. 13. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
