POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 3, 2017) – The Brewers will try to snap their six-game slide as they host City College of New York this Wednesday afternoon at 4pm.  The matchup serves as a midweek tune-up for this weekend's conference games against Union College.

Last Time Out:  Brewers struggled this weekend, losing a trio of games to RIT.  While the Brewers were clicking on offense, the big bats of RIT were too much as they scored 30 runs over the three games.  The Brewers managed to keep in close in the final game, but a five-run 5th was enough for the Tigers to edge them out, 6-3.

A Look at the Brewers (5-12, 0-5 Liberty League):

  • The Brewers have tightened up on defense as of late, averaging only 1.36 errors per game in the last 11 after committing 3.5 a game through their first six.
  • While the offense has been relatively consistent across wins and losses (6.56 runs/9 innings in wins, 3.76 in losses), Vassar's pitching has been an X-factor.  In wins, they have allowed 5.06 total runs/9 innings in wins, while yielding 10.19 in losses.
  • The Brewers have been aggressive on the base paths this year, stealing 26-33 bags through 17 games after going just 37-46 last season in more than twice as many matchups.
  • Sophomore speedster Eric Strickland is still perfect in his career in the category, swiping nine last year and coming in at second on the team with seven already this year.  He has primarily been a pinch runner in the early going, as a shoulder ailment has limited him.
  • Freshman Matt Martino continues to rake for the Brewers on offense.  He is tops on the team with a 1.056 OPS and sits in the top 10 in the Liberty League in both slugging percentage and on base percentage.
  • Sophomore relievers Jesse Mulham and Bryan Rubin both showed potential in mop-up duty this weekend.  Mulham managed 1.2 innings of perfect ball to finish off game 1, while Rubin dealt in the final 4.2 innings of game 3, allowing one earned run while striking out seven.  Rubin has been a standout all year, posting a 2.70 ERA and 11 strikeouts through 10 innings pitched.
  • Freshman Evan Trausch broke out in the last game vs. RIT, reaching base four times and sending one over the left-center wall in the 4th.  He is hitting .286 on the year while vying for the starting first-base job.

A Look at the Beavers (6-9, 4-3 CUNYAC):

  • AfAfter a slew of early cancelations, the Beavers have hit their stride winning five of their last seven.
  • CCNY looks much improved this year, going toe-to-toe with Lehman College and Baruch College, both teams who finished ahead of them last season.  The Beavers won two of three over Lehman while managing a single win in three matchups with Baruch.
  • CCNY showed resilience this weekend, putting up a 5-spot in the 6th to steal one from Lehman 9-7.  They also walked off against the Lightning the week before, scoring eight runs in the final two innings to win 12-9.
  • Freshman Cooper York was the star in that one, lifting a walk-off 3-run homer in the bottom of the 9th to win it.  Though he's hitting just .179 on the year, he has been patient at the plate leading to a respectable .396 on base percentage.
  • Junior Anthony Cacchione is first in the CUNYAC in batting average (.400) and OBP (.542) out of the three-hole.  He also leads the team in runs (14), doubles (4), and slugging percentage (.600), all while serving as one of the regular starting pitchers for the Beavers.
  • Senior cleanup hitter Adrian Pena has launched a couple of home runs this year and currently leads the team in RBI with 14.  He's had a rough go at second base, however, as he has committed 13 errors on the young season.
  • Sophomore Cal Romano looks on the verge of breaking out on the mound.  Splitting time starting games and pitching out of the pen, he leads the team in innings pitched (30.2) and ERA (4.70) and has a 22/7 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
  • The two teams have met once in recent years, with the Brewers sweeping a double-header 4-2, 9-8 back in May of 2015.

Up Next: The Brewers will host Union College for a double-header on Friday April 14 before heading to Schenectady for two more the following day.  With conference play in full swing, the Brewers could use a solid weekend.
