POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar men's fencing team posted a 7-1 record at the annual Vassar Invitational held at Walker Field House on Sunday. In eight rounds, the Brewers picked up wins against Yeshiva, Hunter, Haverford, Lafayette, Army, Incarnate Word, and Drew.
Vassar 21, Yeshiva 6
With 9-0 wins in sabre and a 7-2 victory in foil, the Brewers opened the day with a strong 20-7 decision against Yeshiva. Freshman Connor Travaglione (Vestal, NY), junior
Evin Heintz (Pearland, TX), and senior
Graeme Mills (Boston, MA) all swept their Maccabee opponents 3-0 in sabre, while sophomore
Caleb Klein (Chappaqua, NY) went 3-0 in foil. Junior
Adlai Brandt-Ogman (South Salem, NY) tacked on two wins in foil. Vassar then won a close 5-4 epee match with
Nishay Bhatnagar (Livingston, NJ) going 3-0. Freshman
Jack Plumer (Bel Air, MD) added two epee wins.
Vassar 23, Hunter 4
The Brewers rolled to 8-1 victories in both the sabre and epee fields, while going 7-2 in foil against Hunter. Travaglione and Heintz won 1-0 again in their respective matches. Brandt-Ogman and
Chris Gaehde (Brookline, MA) also were undefeated, going 3-0 in foil. Senior
Noe Berger (Brooklyn, NY) bounced back from a tough first round to pick up two foil victories. Epee saw freshmen
Tom Stadnikov (Sudbury, MA) and Plumer record the clean sweeps at 3-0. Bhatnager also went undefeated at 2-0.
Vassar 12, Stevens 15
The winning streak came to an end against the Ducks in the third round. The Brewers snagged a 6-3 sabre victory behind a 3-0 performance from Heintz and a 2-1 mark from Travaglione. Vassar was edged 4-5 in foil. Berger led the squad going 2-1. Stevens won 7-2 in epee with Plumer giving Vassar the two wins.
Vassar 16, Haverford 11
Vassar bounced back with a 16-11 victory against Haverford. Sabre and epee both pulled off narrow 5-4 wins, and foil was 6-3. Gaehde, Berger, and Klein all posted two foil victories, while Mills and Heintz had two each at sabre. At epee,
Michael Jaklitsch (Saint James, NY) was 2-1.
Vassar 18, Lafayette 9
Momentum carried over to the fifth round when Vassar downed Lafayette 18-9. Foil was the top group at 7-2, while sabre went 6-3. Berger went undefeated at 2-0 in foil. Senior
Roman Guglielmo (New York, NY) went 2-1 in his first match of the day at sabre with Graeme and Mills matching that record.
Vassar 25, Army 2
A 9-0 foil mark and 8-1 sabre and epee victories helped the Brewers roll past West Point 25-2. The trio of Berger, Klein, and Brandt-Ogman went 3-0 at foil, while Jaklitsch and Bhatnagar rolled to 3-0 marks at epee. Mills and Guglielmo tallied 3-0 victories as well.
Vassar 16, Incarnate Word 11
The Brewers were tripped up 3-6 in foil and 4-5 in epee, but a 9-0 sabre victory gave Vassar the overall win over Incarnate Word. This time, Traviglione, Heintz, and Mills all were 3-0, while Berger had two wins at foil. Bhatnagar led the epee group at 2-1.
Vassar 16, Drew 11
Vassar closed the day with a 16-11 victory over the Rangers in the final round. Epee had the most success at 7-2, while sabre was 5-4. Foil dropped a 4-5 decision. Plumer and Jaklitsch wrapped things up at 3-0 at epee. The Brewers came back from being down 1-4, closing with four-straight wins from Mills, Heintz, and Traviglione.
The Brewers return to action next weekend to host the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational at Walker Field House on Sun. Nov. 17.
