POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 12, 2017) – Freshman right-hander
Billy Mathiesen tossed six scoreless innings for the Vassar College baseball team and VC pounded out 10 hits as the Brewers knocked off the City College of New York 11-1 in non-conference action from Prentiss Field Wednesday.
The story for Vassar was its freshman hurler, as Mathiesen needed just 63 pitches to get through six innings, allowing four hits and no runs while fanning four hitters. Mathiesen picked up his first career win for the Brewers on Wednesday, as relievers
John Madsen,
Robert Pinataro and
Bryan Rubin all allowed no earned runs to finish the game.
"
He did a great job, I challenged the pitchers lately, and the biggest thing is that he went in and threw first-pitch strikes, limited his three-ball counts, and threw a gem," said head coach
Matthew Righter. "I was happy, good breaking ball and changeup, and that's the stuff we need to see out of our starting pitching."
Vassar (6-12) got its offense going in the fourth inning, as sophomore
Taylor Smach singled in Denis Shanagher to make the score 1-0. Later in the frame, sophomore
Bryan Rubin flied a ball to center field to score
Matt Martino, who had reached on a hit by pitch.
An inning later, Vassar tallied three more runs, much in part to the help of the Beavers. With one out, junior
Matt Hernandez was hit by a pitch, followed by hit batsmen by
Bobby Kinne and Shanagher. With the bases loaded, freshman
Evan Trausch doubled off the third baseman's glove down the left-field line to plate two. VC would get another run in the stanza on a passed ball.
Up 5-0, the big blow came in the sixth inning, as Vassar pushed across six runs in the bottom half, posting five hits in the inning. Freshman
Connor Levchuck started the rally with a single to right field, followed by another single from Hernandez to put runners at the corners. After a steal from Hernandez,
Kinne plated two with a single up the middle to make the score 7-0.
After a walk from Shanagher, Trausch drove in a run with a RBI single and came around to score on a wild pitch. The rally was finished with the first collegiate hit from
Erik Rabin, as he posted a pinch-hit single to score Martino. That was plenty of offense for the Brewers, as VC rolled to the win.
Kinne finishe 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Trausch was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Martino was hit twice and score twice, as part of the five batters hit on the day for VC. Shanagher also scored a game-high three runs for VC. Pinataro got all three hitters he faced in relief, getting two ground outs. VC held CCNY to six hits, as both teams left eight runners on base.
Adrian Pena led the way for the Beavers (6-10), who broke the school record for hits in a career with three more on Wednesday. Joe Bystrick allowed two hits and no earned runs for the Beavers, while Cooper York worked a scoreless eighth inning.
"I really liked the guy's approach at the plate, I thought the guys attacked early…," said Kinne. "We sat back, drove the ball the other way…we stayed patient, stayed aggressive, and the offense is starting to find its identity."
Vassar will get a day off before hosting Union College Friday afternoon on Prentiss Field for a Liberty League doubleheader.
