POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 6, 2016) – Vassar College (9-9, 5-3 Liberty) will look to continue its solid play of late, as the Brewers play host to Clarkson University in Liberty League action this Saturday and Sunday. Vassar is set to host the Golden Knights after taking three of four against Skidmore College last weekend, which included a sweep of the Thoroughbreds up in Saratoga Springs. The contests were originally slated to be played in Potsdam, NY, but due to cold weather up in North Country, the contests were moved south to Poughkeepsie today. Despite the games being played on Prentiss Field, Clarkson will still staff the games and no video or audio will be available.

A Look At The Brewers (9-9, 5-3 Liberty)Vassar College comes into the weekend winners in four of its last five contests, rallying late to earn the series win over Skidmore in game two Sunday. In that final contest of the day last Saturday, VC posted one run in the ninth to tie the game at five, and then won it in the 11
th on a walk-off sacrifice bunt that also resulted in an error that allowed the winning run to score. The Brewers currently rank fourth in the conference in hitting with a .286 batting average, while sitting in third in the Liberty League in RBI with 86. VC has continued to get on base at a solid rate this year, ranking second in the conference in on-base percentage (.401). VC is third in stolen bases, and also is second in the Liberty in fielding percentage at a .965 clip. The Brewers ERA is fifth in the conference, and VC has gunned down the most attempted base-stealers, throwing out 11 this year.
Offensively,
Nick Johnson still leads all Brewer batters in average with a .409 mark, starting all 18 contests this year while leading the league with 27 hits. His seven doubles are second-most in the Liberty, and his total bases of 37 also rank second.
Cory Wuenschell is hitting .333 on the season as well, while freshman
Matt Schwartz has posted a .333 batting average over his 21 at-bats. In conference-only play, junior
Denis Shanagher has batted .345 for the Brewers, going 10-for-29 with four doubles and four stolen bases. On the hill,
Adam Erkis is ninth in the conference in ERA with a 2.88 mark so far, and teammates
Trent Berg and
Johnny Mrlik rank 15
th and 16
th, respectively. Mrlik is tied for second with three victories this year.
A Look At The Golden Knights (3-11, 0-4 Liberty)Clarkson has played just four games since March 18, dropping all four of a Liberty League four-game set with Rochester Institute of Technology back on March 25-26. Since then, the Golden Knights have had four games cancelled due to weather, missing out on a trip to Farmingdale State University last weekend. With the games moved to Poughkeepsie, Clarkson will be forced to drive the two farthest trips in the Liberty League on back-to-back weekends, taking on VC this weekend in the Queen City of the Hudson, and then coming back down to the Mid-Hudson Valley to take on Bard College April 16-17. Clarkson is hitting .280 as a team coming into the weekend, which is tied for seventh in the conference, while CU is the lone squad in the league without a homer on the season. Clarkson ranks eighth in slugging percentage, and last in on-base percentage at .338. CU has a team ERA of 6.50 over 13 games, and is allowing hitters to bat at a .329 average. The Golden Knights can pick it defensively though, ranking third in fielding with a .964 percentage, making the league's fewest errors so far at 16.
Anthony Padrazo is sixth in the conference in hitting with a .400 average, while Chris Miller is ninth as well with a .380 mark in 14 starts. Greg Jasek, who was a star pitcher last year but hasn't tossed this year due to arm issues, is still swinging the stick well as he has posted a team-high 10 RBI and a .367 batting average. Brad Pearson is the only other player above .300 for the Golden Knights, while Dom Pirro and Will Coleman have each started all 14 games as well for CU. On the mound, Ted Wilson has gone 2-3 in his five appearances, registering an impressive 0.89 ERA, surrendering just two earned runs in 20.1 innings on the hill. Ian Castle is 0-3 with a 1.65 ERA in three starts, and 2015 Liberty League Rookie of the Year Will Coleman has a 6.60 ERA and a 0-1 record in 2016. Eddie Miller has also started three games for the Golden Knights, allowing 17 earned runs in 13.2 innings.
Against Clarkson All-TimeThe Brewers are 11-37 against Clarkson all-time, as CU won all four of last year's games down in Florida to start the Liberty League slate for both teams. Before those four contests, VC had taken six of the previous 10 meetings. With the change, VC will now have not played in Potsdam since 2012.
Other Brewer Notes: - VC has hit lefty and righty pitchers pretty evenly this season, as Vassar is hitting .282 against southpaws and .287 against right-handers.
- Junior
Mike Koscielniak has only registered two official at-bats this season, but he has walked three times and been hit three times, posting an on-base percentage of .875.
- Sophomore
Eric Strickland continues to up his reached base safely streak, as the consecutive mark reached 18 games this past weekend. Strickland is the only player to reach safely in all 18 games, though senior
Cory Wuenschell has in all 17 of his games played.
- Senior
Nick Johnson has eight games with multiple hits this year, also registering two four-hit performances. Johnson is the only player on the squad with a four-hit game in 2016.
- Backstop
Dakota Sagnelli has thrown out seven attempted base-stealers this season, tops in the Liberty League, while also picking off a runner at first once this campaign.
- Junior
Robert Winkelmann continues to rack up the appearances, as his nine lead the team, posting 23 games pitched in over the last two seasons.
-
Eric Strickland leads the team this season with two-out RBI with seven, while
Nick Johnson and
Cory Wuenschell each have six in 2016.
- Vassar is batting .370 as a team this year with the bases loaded, going 10-for-27, while opposing teams are hitting a paltry .238 (5-21).
- So far this year, VC is 3-0 in true road games, defeating Bard College and Skidmore College last week.
- In a surprising statistic, Vassar is 7-3 this season when its opponent scores in the first inning.
Up NextThe Brewers will continue their 15-game home stand on Wednesday afternoon, hosting The College at Old Westbury at 4 p.m.
