ORANGE, CA (March 16, 2016) - The Vassar College men's tennis built momentum early to take down No. 37 Chapman University on the road Wednesday afternoon.
The Brewers opened competition by sweeping doubles, despite a shakeup within the lineup.
"I'm really proud of the three doubles teams," coach
Alex Wong said. "
Daniel Cooper and
Nick Zuczek have been holding down the fort at No. 1 doubles. They've had some really close matches against some top teams, so it was great to see them pull out a victory against a really good team.
Cooper and Zuczek claimed No. 1 doubles 8-4 against Brett Buford and Charlie Werman to win their fifth match of the season together.
"We mixed it up and had two different combinations at two and three," Wong said. "I'm proud of those guys for coming out with wins even though they were playing with some different people."
Nick Litsky and
Evan Udine claimed No. 2 doubles 8-2 against Chris Damion and Josh Sarsfield, while
Juan Felipe Laso and
Alexander Luckmann took No. 3 doubles 8-5 against Sam Mitteldorf and Hunter Morris.
"When we're able to come out with the lead going into singles, it definitely gives us a lot of momentum," Wong said. "I think we've proven that we're as good of a singles team against any other team in the nation, so having the lead definitely gave us a lot more confidence."
Laso continued to amaze in singles, taking down Morris 6-0, 6-1 at the four spot before Cooper clinched the team win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mitteldorf at the two.
Nick Lee picked up another win for Vassar, defeating Sarsfield 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles before
Nick Litsky took down Buford 7-6, 7-6 at No. 1 singles.
Jamie Anderson rounded the day with a 6-2, 6-7, 10-6 victory over Igor Silva at the six.
"We came out with the right energy, the right mentality," Wong said. "That's a credit to them and the intensity they brought today to Chapman."
With the win, the Brewers improve to 5-7, while the Panthers fall to 1-6.
Next up, the Vassar men's tennis team takes the court in Claremont, CA against Trinity College (Conn.) on Thursday at 3 p.m.
