Alex Wong stepped into the head coaching role for Vassar Men's Tennis in the fall of 2013.
Wong brought a wealth of coaching experience to Vassar, at the the collegiate, club, and junior levels. He has previously coached at DII Bentley University in Massachusetts, overseeing the Falcon women’s program for 10 seasons, as well as the men’s program for eight. During his tenure at Bentley, Wong also earned his Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in Management. The Wesleyan graduate led the Bentley men to six NCAA Tournament appearances as well as back-to-back NE-10 titles in 2010 and 2011.
He coached the women’s side to two NCAA tournament berths, in 2007 and 2009. In 2009-10, Wong received both NE-10 Coach of the Year as well as ITA Men’s East Region Coach of the Year. He has additionally advocated for sportsmanship and fair play consistently throughout his career, with four of his student-athletes earning the ITA’s Division II National Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship.
Wong has held numerous coaching positions at private clubs throughout the greater Boston area, such as Wellesley Country Club, Sudbury River Tennis Club, and New England Team Tennis. He currently serves as the Head Tennis Pro at Woodland Golf Club in Auburndale during the Summer.
In the 2013-14 season, his first as head coach, the Brewers upset #20 nationally-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan 5-4, never fell out of the ITA Northeast Region top 20, and went on to finish third in the Liberty League. In 2014-2015, the Brewers recorded signature wins over George Fox, Hobart, and Whittier, ending their season in the semifinals of Liberty Leagues. The competitive ‘15-’16 season saw Wong’s squad narrowly miss out on the postseason tournament.
During the most recent campaign, the Brewers ranked as high as #16 in the Northeast, upsetting University of Rochester as well as national #31 Trinity College en route to an 11-10 record and a narrow loss to Skidmore College in the semifinals of the Liberty League tournament. Thus far, Wong has coached nine All-Liberty Singles and Doubles Performers in his four seasons, including Nick Litsky, the conference's Co-Rookie of the Year in 2013-14.
In collegiate competition, Wong spent four years as Wesleyan’s #1 singles player, from 1999-2003, and ranked in the top 15 in the East Region during his final three seasons. He achieved a career-high regional ranking of #8 and a career-high national ranking of 32 in 2002. After his college career, Wong has distinguished himself as one of the top “young-senior” players in the United States, finishing 2012 as the first-ranked doubles player in New England, and 2015 as the top player in the nation in the Men’s 30-and-up division.
He has four gold, two silver, and five bronze balls to his name, all earned at USTA National Championship tournaments. Most recently, he competed in Umag, Croatia as part of the USA's delegation at the ITF Young Seniors World Team Championships, the equivalent of the prestigious Davis and Fed Cups for the young senior age divisions.
