Women's Fencing Scores Three Solid Finishes at NEIFC Championships

Epee leads the way in fifth place, sabre places sixth, foil comes in eighth

CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Vassar College Women's Fencing team posted three solid finishes at the NEIFC Championships on Saturday at MIT as the epee squad of junior Olivia Barnes, first year Katrina Zeng, junior Naomi Hirsch and sophomores Vanessa Mark and Aanya Mukherjee led the way with a fifth place finish. The sabre squad took home a sixth place overall finish while the foil squad came in at eighth place in the team competition.

EPEE
  • Vassar started the opening round with an incredible effort as the Brewers earned 18 victories, tied for the most in Pool #2, to finish tied for second overall in the first pool round.
  • Zeng was a perfect 7-0 in the round while Barnes earned five victories along with two wins each from Hirsch, Mark and Mukherjee.
  • The Brewers tallied seven wins in the final pool to finish fifth overall, led by three wins from Zeng, two from Barnes and one apiece from Mukherjee and Hirsch.
SABRE
  • The sabre squad of junior Kira Wheeler and sophomores Abigail Geiger and Vanessa Mark took a third place finish in Pool #2 with 13 victories and were sixth overall in the opening round.
  • Wheeler and Mark each scored five wins apiece in the round along with Geiger scoring three victories.
  • In the final pool, the Brewers battled to a sixth place finish by tallying five victories.
  • Mark led the way with three victories in the final round while Geiger and Wheeler each secured a win.
FOIL
  • The foil squad of senior Hunter Grogan, first year Zoe North, junior Nicole Ezell and first year Aurelia Cacace battled to earn nine victories to finish tied for fourth in the opening pool.
  • Grogan and North each tallied three victories while Ezell picked up two wins and Cacace battled in one bout.
  • In the final round of Pool #2, the Brewers earned 18 victories, which was the top in the pool, to finish eighth overall.
  • North tallied six wins to lead the way while Grogan and Ezell each earned five victories each.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar will compete at the NCAA Northeast Regional on Sunday, March 10th on the campus of LIU.
