Poughkeepsie, NY - The United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) announced its All-Region selections on Tuesday as Vassar College Women's Fencing first year epee fencer
Veronica Scherk and sophomore sabre fencer
Vivian Wei were named All-Northeast Region selections along with Vassar College Men's Fencing sophomore epee fencer
Alexander North scoring All-Northeast Region honors.
Scherk was named a First Team honoree along with earning the top spot on the Division III selections following a record-setting fifth place finish in epee at the regional meet on Sunday. The first year collected two wins in the opening round to advance to the quarterfinals where she earned three victories to punch her ticket to the semifinals. From there, she posted a 4-2 record in the semifinal pool to qualify for the final pool of 12. Scherk rallied for six victories in the final round which led her to a top-five finish in epee, marking the first time in almost three decades that a Vassar women's fencer has finished in the top-five.
North registered Honorable Mention honors and was the second fencer in the Division III honors after claiming a ninth place finish in epee for the highest finish in a regional since 2012. North received a bye into the quarterfinal round where he recorded three victories to move on to the semifinal round. In the semifinals, North registered a 4-2 mark to advance to the final pool round for the second straight season. The sophomore then earned five wins in the final pool of 12 to post a ninth place finish, improving on his regional finish of 12th place from a season ago.
Wei garners Division III accolades in sabre following a 21st place finish in the Northeast Regional meet on Sunday. After earning a bye into the quarterfinal round, Wei scored four victories to advance into the semifinal round. In the semifinals, Wei picked up a victory to score a top-21 finish.
Vassar awaits the selections into the NCAA Championships today, Tuesday, March 10th.
