Scherk Earns Record-Setting Fifth Place Finish in Epee at the NCAA Northeast Regionals

The first year posts a fifth place finish out of 53 total competitors in a highly competitive regional

Poughkeepsie, NY - First year Veronica Scherk scored an impressive fifth overall finish out of 53 competitors in epee, marking the Brewers highest regional finisher since 1997,  along with sophomore Vivian Wei reaching the semifinal round for the Vassar College Women's Fencing team at the 2026 NCAA Northeast Regionals inside Walker Field House on Sunday. The Brewers will await the selections to the NCAA National Championships on Tuesday, which would be held at Notre Dame from March 19-22.

Epee
  • Opening Round
    • Scherk advanced to the quarterfinal round after posting wins over Vera Witte (Brandeis) and Elisa Treglia (St. John's) in pool #5.
    • First year Lela Mittman recorded a win over Daniel Troubetzkoy in pool #8.
    • Junior Nika Ungurianu battled in four bouts in pool #2.
    • Senior Aanya Muhkerjee compete against four foes in pool #6.
  • Quarterfinal Round
    • Scherk earned three wins in the pool #1 to register a spot in the top-21 semifinal round.
    • Scherk defeated Kira Nguyen (Brown), Karen Bei (Tufts) and Zandra Feland (MIT) to advance.
  • Semifinal Round
    • Scherk punched her ticket to the final round after winning four bouts in pool #1 in the semifinal round.
    • The first year earned victories over Renee Sun (Wellesley), Kira Nguyen (Brown), Anya Mehrotra (Yale) and Katherine Chen (NYU).
  • Final Round
    • Scherk tallied six victories in the final pool of 12 competitors as she finished fifth overall in her first Northeast Regional meet and post the best finish in a regional event since 1997.
    • Scherk defeated Varvara Bezuglaya (Columbia), Faith Park (Harvard), Yasmine Khamis (Harvard), Michelle Lee (Yale), Ashley Luo (Brown) and Chen (NYU) in the final round.

  • Opening Round
    • Junior Zoe North tallied a victory over Lavinia Oliveira in pool #1.
    • Sophomore Sushama Gadiyaram competed against four foes in pool #6.
    • First year Sarah Huynh battled four competitors in pool #7.
Sabre
  • Opening Round
    • Sophomore Lily Paine scored two wins over Reya Ghayalod (Cornell) and Sophia Jeffords (Brandeis) in pool #1.
    • First year Mercer Colby garnered a victory over Mariama Barry (Hunter) in pool #7.
  • Quarterfinal Round
    • Wei earned a bye to the quarterfinal round and collected four wins in pool #4 to advance to the top-21 semifinal round.
    • Wei tallied wins over Rachel Buhay (Boston College), Jenna Freedman (Columbia), Salome Berger (St. John's) and Olympe Jean (Tufts).
  • Semifinal Round
    • Wei picked up a win over Hannah Tao (MIT) in pool #3 to finish 21st overall.
