WELLESLEY, MA -Â The Vassar women's fencing squad returned to conference action this weekend, going 4-2 at the NFC Multimeet #3 on Saturday. The Brewers defeated UMass (22-5), Sacred Heart (22-5), New Hampshire (26-1), and Boston University (17-10), but fell to Tufts (7-20) and Wellesley (8-19).
The Brewers opened with a tough bout against Tufts and fell 4-5 in foil, 3-6 at epee, and 0-9 in saber. Zoe Tolbert led the foil squad going 3-0 against the Jumbos, while Tori Lubin added one victory. At epee, Olivia Barnes and Addy Xie tacked on a win each.
Vassar bounced back with a decisive victory against UMass in the second round, with foil winning 9-0. Saber won 7-2, and epee was 6-3. Lubin and Tolbert recorded 3-0 marks, while Hunter Grogan went 2-0. Katherine Wu subbed in the final round and earned one win. Saber rebounded after a tough first round, and Elise Poniatowski and Kira Wheeler both went 3-0 to lead the Brewers. Kae Czesak also added one win. Xie topped the epee squad going 3-0, while Barnes tallied a 2-1 mark.
The Brewers kept rolling in the third round, using a 9-0 epee and an 8-1 foil result to defeat Sacred Heart. Vassar also won 5-4 at saber. Xie, Barnes, and Danielle Golden all went 3-0 in epee against the Pioneers. Tolbert and Lubin continued their winning streak and were undefeated at foil. Grogan went 2-1. Saber was a little closer, but Wheler managed the 3-0 round. Poniatowski and Daniela Mujica had a win to give the Brewers the edge.
The fourth round saw Vassar dismantle New Hampshire and the Brewers only dropped one bout. Saber and epee won win 9-0 sweeps, while foil was 8-1. Tolbert won her 12th straight bout with a 3-0 round, while Lubin was also 3-0. Sophie Jones competed, going 2-1. Due to no Wildcats saber fencers, the Brewers had the round off.
Vassar had a closer round against Boston University but won 17-10. Saber won 7-2, while foil was 6-3. Epee had a 4-5 setback against the Terriers. At saber, Wheeler went 3-0, and Czesak was 2-0. Tolbert improved her winning streak to 15 bouts after going 3-0, while Lubin also went 3-0. Despite a tough epee round, Golden managed to go 2-1 to lead the squad.
The Brewers fell 6-19 in the final round against host Wellesley. Foil was tripped up 4-5, while both epee and saber dropped 2-7 decisions. Tolbert managed to win the first two bouts to win 17 straight but dropped the final. Lubin wrapped up the last round going 2-1.  Â
Vassar now heads to New York City to face Columbia and New York on Feb. 16. The start time is set for 6 p.m.
