NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Vassar women's fencing team faced tough competition at Columbia University's George Kolombatovich Historical Meet on Wednesday evening at the Dodge Fitness Center. The Brewers fell to NYU and Columbia but had some solid individual success.
The Vassar women fenced NYU first and dropped the 20-7 decision to the Violets. Epee and foil fell 3-6, while saber lost by a 1-8 mark. After losing 4-5 to NYU's Renee Wu in the first bout, senior Zoe Tolbert (Olympia, WA) defeated Annika Santos 5-2 in the second. Tolbert then bested Holly Fong 5-3 to finish 2-1 against NYU. Senior Tori Lubin (Westport, CT) had a tough first bout and then was edged 4-5 by Wu. She finished strong by winning 5-4 over Anne Marie Heiser.
At epee, first-year Danielle Golden (Chestnut Hill, MA) went 2-1. Golden won 5-3 over Anna Lanzman before being tripped up 4-5 in the second bout. She then had a close 4-3 victory against Ally Hu. In the third round, first-year Olivia Barnes (Bend, OR) tacked on a 5-3 win against Lanzman.
First-year Kira Wheeler (New Paltz, NY) added the one saber victory, defeating Chloe Chen 5-4 in a second-round contest.
It was not as close against the host Lions, with the Brewers losing 5-22. Epee lost 3-6, and foil fell 2-7, while saber was swept 0-9. Both Lubin and Tolbert picked up wins in the second bout. Lubin edged Ruoqiu Fei 5-4, and Tolbert won 5-4 against Vivian Zheng.
In the first round, Barnes picked up a solid 5-3 victory over Nika Filippov. Then in the third round, Nicole Ezell (Morristown, NJ) and Addy Xie (Falmouth, MA) both won 5-4 versus their Columbia opponents.
Vassar hosts the EWFC Championship next at Walker Field House on Sun. Feb. 20 at 9 a.m. Â
