POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar women's fencing team won the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invite title on Sunday at the Walker Field House. The Brewers "Burgundy" squad opened the pool round going 5-0 with wins against the Vassar "Gray" team (23-4), Drew (17-10), West Point (20-7), RPI (27-0), and Yeshiva (26-1). Meanwhile, the "Gray" group was 3-2 in the pool by defeating Army (14-13), RPI (17-10), and Yeshiva (18-9).
The "Burgundy" group received a first-round bye in the championship bracket, while the "Gray" grabbed the third seed and faced off against Yeshiva. The Brewers handled the Maccabees 16-2. The foil squad went 6-0, with Katherine Wu, Sophie Jones, and Rose Parker each going 2-0. The epee group was 7-0, and first-year Nicole Ezell led the way at 3-0. Carter Mucha and Naomi Hirsch were both undefeated at 2-0. Kae Czesak tacked on a 2-0 mark at saber, while Julianna Torres added one win.
In the semifinals, the "Gray" squad struggled against Drew and fell 12-1 to the Rangers. Hirsch tacked on the one epee win for Vassar. After the bye, the Vassar "Burgundy" group defeated West Point 14-4. Foil was 8-0 behind 3-0 performances from Hunter Grogan and Tori Lubin. Zoe Tolbert added two wins before the round ended. Saber got tripped up 2-3 by Army, but Kira Wheeler went 2-0. At epee, the Brewers won 4-1. Olivia Barnes posted a 2-0 round, and Addy Xie and Parker added the other two victories.
Drew and Vassar "Burgundy" faced off in the championship, with the hosts pulling off a 14-6 victory. The Brewers won the foil 8-1 and epee 4-1. The Rangers earned the 4-2 advantage at the saber. At foil, Vassar cruised with Tolbert and Grogan, both going 3-0. Despite falling in the first bout, Lubin won the next two to go 2-1. Danielle Golden led the epee group at 2-1, and Parker and Barnes added a win each. Wheeler had the two wins at saber and was 2-0.
Vassar next travels to Fairfield, CT for the Sacred Heart Tradition Invite on Sun. Dec. 5 at 10 a.m.
