POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar women's fencing showed some early season success at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday, going 5-2. The Brewers opened with an 18-9 victory against Haverford and then won 16-11 over Lafayette before falling 11-16 to LIU. Vassar then defeated Drew 16-11 in the fourth round. Wagner edged Vassar 14-13 in the fifth round, but the Brewers closed out the day with wins over FDU (24-3) and Denison (19-8).
The foil squad led the way with a 48-12 record, while epee went 44-19. The saber group recorded a 24-39 mark. Senior Zoe Tolbert had an impressive day, leading the Brewers with a 20-1 foil record.
While the saber squad struggled at times, first-year Kira Wheeler posted a 14-7 record and went undefeated against Drew (3-0), FDU (3-0), and Denison (3-0). First-year Kae Czesak added six bout victories and went 5-1 in the last two rounds. Sophomore Daniela Mujica tacked on four wins for the Brewers.
Three Vassar "A" foil fencers competed, and they all posted double-digit wins. Tolbert went undefeated in every round while going 2-1 against LIU. Sophomore Hunter Grogan (13-8) tallied a 2-1 mark against Drew and then closed the day going 3-0 over Denison. Senior Tori Lubin went 15-6 and won her final six bouts against FDU and Denison.
Plenty of Vassar epee fencers competed, with first-year Olivia Barnes going 12-3. Four other Brewers also recorded winning records in senior Rose Parker (9-5) and first-years Danielle Golden (8-1), Addy Xie (8-3), and Naomi Hirsch (5-1). Junior Carter Mucha also earned three wins. Barnes did not have a losing record against any team. Parker opened the first round with a 3-0 victory against Haverford and then went 2-1 over LIU. Golden was 3-0 in bouts with Haverford and Drew, with a 2-1 mark versus LIU. Hirsch continued to improve, going 3-0 over FDU and 2-1 against Lafayette.
Vassar continues its season next weekend by hosting the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invite on Sun. Nov. 21 at Walker Field House. Â
