POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar men's fencing squad went 4-0 at the January Invitational on Sunday at the Walker Field House. The Brewers posted wins over Cleveland State and Detroit-Mercy in four rounds of action.
Vassar opened with a 19-8 win over Cleveland State and then downed Detroit-Mercy 17-10. After a lunch break, the Brewers beat Cleveland 14-13 and then closed with an 18-9 victory over Detroit-Mercy.
Epee led the Vassar fencers with a 26-10 day, while sabre went 22-14. Foil had a solid outing as well, going 22-14. Leading the epee squad was sophomore
Michael Jaklitsch (Saint James, NY) who went 10-1 on the day. Sophomore
Abram Gregory (North Smithfield, RI) went 8-2 and freshman
Alden Pierson Smela (Minneapolis, MN) tabbed an 8-4 record.
Junior
Graeme Mills (Boston, MA) led the sabre squad at 9-1, and freshman
Max Deak (San Diego, CA) was close by at 7-2. Senior
Tom Possidente (Saratoga Springs, NY) went 3-3, while Nicholas Willimas (Morris, CT) was 3-6.
Noe Berger (Brooklyn, NY) picked up a 9-4 record to lead the foil squad.
Adlai Brandt-Ogman (South Salem, NY) was next at 6-2. Freshman
Caleb Klein (Chappaqua, NY) went 4-1.
Seniors Possidente, Williams and
Michael Skolnick (South Setauket, NY) were also honored today during the senior day ceremony before the matches started.
Vassar travels to Brown next weekend for the Northeast Fencing Conference Meet No. 2 on Sat. Jan. 26. Start time is set for 10 a.m.
