Vassar Women’s Fencing Notes – NFC Meet #3

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 9, 2018) – After a tough 23-4 defeat at Yale University last weekend, the Vassar College women's fencing will look to right the ship with seven big Northeast Fencing Conference matches at Smith College this weekend. Vassar heads into this weekend with a long conference victory over Tufts, but has a chance to climb the standings as high as fifth place with a perfect day.

Game Details
Tournament: at Northeast Fencing Conference Meet #3
Teams: New Hampshire, Dartmouth College, Boston University, Sacred Heart, UMass, Smith, Wellesley
Site: Northampton, MA – Smith College
Facility: Smith College Indoor Track and Tennis (ITT) Center
Date: February 10, 2018
Time: 10 a.m.

Last Time Out: The Brewers traveled to New Haven, CT to take on the strong Bulldogs squad from Yale University, but VC did earn some wins along with near misses as well. Senior Annie Innes-Gold continued her year-long mauling of competition with two more victories, while juniors Sophie Blumenstock and Rose Hulsey-Vincent each earned wins as well.

A Look at the Brewers (12-21):

  • The Brewers still have a chance to get to 20 wins on the year, sitting with 12 currently, which would be the fourth-straight season to hit that milestone. VC still has 16 more dual matches on the year.
  • After Saturday's match at Yale, the Vassar sabre team has posted 151 wins on the year, best of the three squads.
  • Senior Annie Innes-Gold has a current bout mark of 80-18, which includes an NCAA mark of 71-18.
  • Senior teammate and squad partner Lilia Hutchinson has chalked up 31 wins as well for the Brewers.
  • Since returning from her semester abroad, Sophie Blumenstock has gone, while fellow junior Mirit Rutishauser had a squad-high 52 wins.
  • Senior Zoe Morgan has added 28 dual-meet bout wins for the foil team as well for Vassar.
  • In epee, Rose Hulsey-Vincent has chalked up a winning mark of 10-8 since returning to the team, while Shannon Chen paces the squad with 21 victories this season.
  • VC battles six teams that are either one win below or above them in the standings this weekend, so expect some tight scores Saturday.

Up Next: The Brewers will head to New York City on Valentine's Day, February 14 to exchange pleasantries with No. 1 Columbia University and No. 9 New York University at the annual Historical Meet in the Blue Gymnasium starting at 6 p.m. in the Big Apple.
