NEW YORK (February 14, 2018) -- Junior
Rose Hulsey-Vincent had a strong night of fencing for the Vassar College women's fencing team, as the Brewers competed in the prestigious Historical Meet, held at Columbia University's Blue Gymnasium Valentine's Day evening.
Vassar fell to the host and No. 2 Lions 22-5, while New York University knocked off the Brewers 23-4, but VC still saw some strong performances Wednesday evening. Against Columbia, the sabre team was able to pick up three bout victories, as senior captain
Lilia Hutchinson started the match with a 5-2 win over Katie Angen. Freshman
Rose Parker tied the weapon match at two bouts apiece in the second round, as earned an exciting 5-4 win over Audrey Yun. Fellow freshman
Nicoletta Dinelli also topped Yun 5-4 in the third round, but missing senior standout
Annie Innes-Gold made it tough for the Brewers Wednesday evening.
Junior
Sophie Blumenstock earned a win for the Brewers in foil, as she knocked off Danya Hu 5-4 in the second round. Also, junior
Mirit Rutishauser pushed Hu to a 4-4 score in the third round, but the Columbia fencer was able to pick up the final touch. Hulsey-Vincent also captured a 5-4 win over Rand Johnson to finish the match against Columbia.
Against NYU, both the foil and epee teams picked up a pair of wins, led by the pair of victories in epee by Hulsey-Vincent. The junior knocked Rachel Wu 5-3, and then finished the round with a 5-4 victory over Hannah Bennett. In foil, both Blumenstock and Rutishauser were able to capture wins, as Blumenstock earned a win over Lily Gabay and Rutishauser topped Alisa Traskunov 5-1.
The Brewers will now look head to the EWFC Championships this weekend at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, starting at 9 a.m. Sunday, February 18 in the Charm City.
