CHESTNUT HILL, MA (January 28, 2018) -- The Vassar College women's fencing team traveled to Boston College Sunday afternoon for the first day of action for the team in the Northeast Fencing Conference, going 1-4 on the day in five league matches in action from Flynn Recreation Center.
The Brewers knocked off Tufts University 14-13 in the second round of fencing Sunday, but dropped matches with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (17-10), Boston College (21-6), Brandeis University (18-9) and Brown University (19-8). Vassar (12-20) opened the day with a defeat to MIT, led by the foil squad that posted four victories including a pair by juniors
Sophie Blumenstock and
Mirit Rutishauser. Junior
Rose Hulsey-Vincent competed for the first time this year in epee, going 2-1, while senior
Annie Innes-Gold was 3-0 in sabre.
Against the Jumbos of Tufts University, Vassar's foil team posted seven wins to push the Brewers to a nice 14-13 win. The foil team saw Blumenstock go 3-0 against the Jumbos, while freshman
Isabella Migani and Rutishauser each went 2-1. The epee team saw Hulsey-Vincent win two of her three bouts, while
Hannah Gaven also earned a victory. In sabre, Innes-Gold was 2-1 while senior classmate
Lilia Hutchinson earned what proved to be a huge victory as VC eked out the win.
Against the conference leading and hosts Golden Eagles of Boston College, Vassar earned six victories, four coming from the foil team. Blumenstock was 3-0 against BC, while Rutishauser earned a win in her final bout of the match. Hulsey-Vincent earned a 5-0 win in round three in epee, while Innes-Gold also earned a 5-4 win in the second round.
In the fourth match round, Vassar fenced well against a strong Judge squad, with the sabre team earning a 5-4 win. Innes-Gold went 3-0 to pace the sabre squad for Vassar, while
Nicoletta Dinelli also finished 2-1 for the Brewers. Hulsey-Vincent collected two more wins in epee for Vassar with her only loss coming in a 5-4 defeat, and Rutishauser earned another win as well against Brandeis.
In the final match of the day, Vassar nearly earned a win in foil against Brown, as Rutishauser was 2-1 while Blumenstock also registered two more victories against the Ivy League opponent. Hulsey-Vincent earned another win in epee, outlasting Sophie Uleneis, and Innes-Gold posted two wins with
Rose Parker earning a 5-3 win as well.
Vassar will now have a week off before traveling to New Haven, CT next Saturday at noon for a dual match with Yale University.
