CHESTNUT HILL, MA (January 28, 2018) -- The Vassar College women's fencing team traveled to Boston College Sunday afternoon for the first day of action for the team in the Northeast Fencing Conference, going 1-4 on the day in five league matches in action from Flynn Recreation Center.

The Brewers knocked off Tufts University 14-13 in the second round of fencing Sunday, but dropped matches with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (17-10), Boston College (21-6), Brandeis University (18-9) and Brown University (19-8). Vassar (12-20) opened the day with a defeat to MIT, led by the foil squad that posted four victories including a pair by juniors Sophie Blumenstock and Mirit Rutishauser. Junior Rose Hulsey-Vincent competed for the first time this year in epee, going 2-1, while senior Annie Innes-Gold was 3-0 in sabre.

Against the Jumbos of Tufts University, Vassar's foil team posted seven wins to push the Brewers to a nice 14-13 win. The foil team saw Blumenstock go 3-0 against the Jumbos, while freshman Isabella Migani and Rutishauser each went 2-1. The epee team saw Hulsey-Vincent win two of her three bouts, while Hannah Gaven also earned a victory. In sabre, Innes-Gold was 2-1 while senior classmate Lilia Hutchinson earned what proved to be a huge victory as VC eked out the win.

Against the conference leading and hosts Golden Eagles of Boston College, Vassar earned six victories, four coming from the foil team. Blumenstock was 3-0 against BC, while Rutishauser earned a win in her final bout of the match. Hulsey-Vincent earned a 5-0 win in round three in epee, while Innes-Gold also earned a 5-4 win in the second round.

In the fourth match round, Vassar fenced well against a strong Judge squad, with the sabre team earning a 5-4 win. Innes-Gold went 3-0 to pace the sabre squad for Vassar, while Nicoletta Dinelli also finished 2-1 for the Brewers. Hulsey-Vincent collected two more wins in epee for Vassar with her only loss coming in a 5-4 defeat, and Rutishauser earned another win as well against Brandeis.

In the final match of the day, Vassar nearly earned a win in foil against Brown, as Rutishauser was 2-1 while Blumenstock also registered two more victories against the Ivy League opponent.
