Baseball Wins Weekend Series With Plattsburgh After Sunday's Twinbill Split

FARMINGDALE, NY (April 2, 2017) – The Vassar College baseball team earned a walk-off win in game one of a non-conference doubleheader Sunday, defeating Plattsburgh State 4-3 in eight innings to win the weekend series with the Cardinals. Vassar would drop game three of the series in the nightcap, falling 4-1 to end the weekend. VC won the first game of the series Saturday 7-3.

Vassar 4, Plattsburgh 3 (8 innings)
Freshman Matt Martino delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring fellow freshman Daniel Bonfiglio to earn the walk-off victory in game one of the day. Plattsburgh scored first in the top of the second, as Frank Tricamo plated a run on a fielder's choice to make the score 1-0.

The Brewers evened the score in the bottom of the fourth inning, as senior Denis Shanagher started the frame with a double. Bonfiglio would single through the right side three batters later to plate Shanagher, but Taylor Smach was thrown out at the plate to deny VC of more runs.

An inning later, Vassar gained its first lead of the day, as junior shortstop Matt Hernandez singled through the left side to score Jake Doyle and put VC up 2-1. The Brewers added another in the sixth, benefitting from an error by the Cardinals to give VC some breathing room.

Vassar freshman Jake Silver cruised into the seventh inning, but the Cardinals would force extra innings thanks to a Stephen Bryant two-run single to make the score 3-3. Sophomore Bryan Rubin came on and induced a ground out to get out of the jam and keep the score tied. That would set up the late game heroics for Vassar, as Bonfiglio doubled with two outs down the left field line, and came around as Martino laced a single to center to win the game for VC.

Shanagher was 2-for-4 for the Brewers, while Bonfiglio chalked up two hits and two runs in game one. Martino chalked up his first career three-hit performance for the Brewers as well. Silver went 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs and eight hits, before handing the ball to Rubin. Rubin got the win for VC, getting four outs while allowing just one base on balls.

Plattsburgh 4, Vassar 1
Plattsburgh (4-9) pushed across three runs in the top of the second inning, and Ryan Whalen allowed no runs over his four innings on the hill as VC salvaged the third and final game of the series. The Cardinals chalked up four hits in the frame, as Santino Ycaza, TJ Montalbano and Bryant all had RBI singles in the frame. Plattsburgh added an unearned run in the top of the fifth to make the score 4-0.

Vassar got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, as junior Bobby Kinne delivered a pinch hit RBI double to right center, but that was all that VC would muster in game two. Shanagher chalked up his fourth consecutive multi-hit performance, going 3-for-4. For the weekend, Shanagher posted seven hits against the Cardinals.

Freshman Evan Trausch was 1-for-3 with a double in game two, while Taylor Smach and Shangher each upped their reached base safely streaks to nine games. Sophomore Joe Conti came on in relief in game two, allowing no earned runs on three hits, striking out four batters. Fellow relievers Jesse Mulham and Robert Pinataro came on and worked scoreless innings as well for the Brewers.

Both teams posted nine hits, while Vassar left 10 runners on base. Alex Follmer had two hits for Plattsburgh, and Montalbano chalked up two hits in four plate appearances. Whalen got the win for the Cardinals, while Alex Fauvell got the save despite allowing two hits to start the seventh.

The Brewers (5-7) will be right back in action on Tuesday afternoon, hosting the Yellowjackets of the University of Rochester for a Liberty League twinbill on Prentiss Field starting at noon.
