FT. MYERS, FL (March 19, 2017) – The Vassar College baseball team was forced to play another long doubleheader after going 20 innings Saturday, and the fatigued Brewers were unable to get it going in dropping both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to Plymouth State Sunday with scores of 10-5 and 10-0.
Plymouth State 10, Vassar 5
The Brewers and Panthers (4-2) were locked in a tight game through four innings, but four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings pushed Plymouth State into the lead for good. The Panthers got on the board with two in the bottom of the first, as Ryan Boldwin doubled in two runs.
VC (3-5) trimmed the Panther lead in half in the top of the third inning, as
Mike Koscielniak singled with one out and would score later in the frame on a throwing error by PSU pitcher Trevor Doyle. An inning later, sophomore
Bryan Rubin deadlocked the score with a sacrifice fly, scoring
Matt Martino who singled to start the rally.
PSU scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead, but VC responded with three runs in the top of the sixth, as
Taylor Smach tripled in a run and scored a batter later on a RBI single from Rubin through the right side. That was as close as the Brewers would get, as four runs in the bottom of the sixth doomed Vassar in the 10-5 loss.
Smach was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored for Vassar, posting a double and triple while finishing just a homer short of the cycle. Vassar posted eight hits in the game, as the Brewers used six pitchers in the game. Vassar sophomore
Jake Doyle got his first start as a pitcher on Sunday, throwing well while allowing just two earned runs on three hits. Junior
John Madsen and sophomore
Jesse Mulham also allowed no runs in relief.
James Garnett had three hits, three RBI and three runs scored for the Panthers, while starter Taylor Doyle went 5.1 innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out three. Nate Frederick went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Eric Leitch was 2-for-3 as well with a run.
Plymouth State 10, Vassar 0
The Vassar College team stranded 12 runners in game two against Plymouth State, and the Panthers were able to score five early runs in cruising to the win. PSU plated four in the top of the first, and followed with another in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. VC loaded the bases in the bottom of the second on a hit by pitch and singles by Smach and freshman
Evan Trausch, but Vassar couldn't push across a run to strand three.
The Panthers pushed acrosse two more in the fourth inning, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to make the score 10-0. VC had runners in scoring position in six of seven innings, but weren't able to take advantage as VC was 1-for-14 on RBI opportunities. Smach was 2-for-4 with a double for the game, while Kinne added two hits and a double as well. Freshman
Robert Pinataro came in to finish the game for VC, allowing no hits and runs over 1.2 innings.
The Brewers will have Monday afternoon off before finishing their trip with a single game against Johns Hopkins University at 9 a.m. in action from Terry Park Tuesday morning.
