POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 11, 2017) – The Vassar College men's fencing team will be looking to have a big weekend their second Northeast Fencing Conference meeting of the season. Last week the Brewers fell to Yale University 8-19. At the last Northeast Fencing Conference meeting the Brewers struggled only pulling out one win during their five matches.
Last year when Vassar took on Sacred Heart University, University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College, Boston University and the University of the Massachusetts they were able to win all five matches. The Brewers will surely be looking to repeat their success from lasts years meetings this weekend.

Last Time Out: The Brewers traveled to New Haven, CT to take on the Yale University Bulldogs. Unfortunately for the Brewers they were not able to pick up a win and ended up falling to the Bulldogs by a score of 19-8. On a positive note however, Vassar was able to get some strong wins during the match, as both the sabre and foil teams picked up three bout victories while the epee squad earned two wins.
A Look At The Brewers (23-9):
- The freshman sabre fencer Graeme Mills went 2-1 during the Brewers last outing, beating out Reed Srere 5-4 and blowing out Yale senior fencer Ian Richard. These wins bring Mills' win total to 51 for his first season.
- Junior Jonathan Alperstein once again picked up a win in epee, with a 5-2 victory over junior Avery Vella. Alperstein has the Brewers highest victory percentage for epee in league play with 58.33%.
- Alperstein also has 60 wins, which is tops among epee fencers, while posting 187 dual bout wins over his tenure at Vassar.
- Junior Tom Racek picked up another win with a 5-3 victory over Yale sophomore Daniel Flesch. Racek is sporting a dominant victory percentage of 73.33% in NFC play.
- Vassar's other two wins from the foil team came from sophomore Michael Skolnick and freshman Noe Berger. The Brewers will need their foil team to once again step up this upcoming weekend.
- Last year the Brewers were able to dominate all their matches against the teams they will be playing this weekend. Their biggest win came against the University of New Hampshire with a score of 24-3.
- Vassar is currently tied for sixth in the conference in standing with one victory, but all but one team VC will face this weekend is below the Brewers in the standings.
- This weekend the Brewers' toughest matches will most likely be against Sacred Heart and UMass, which rank fifth and sixth in the conference standings, respectively.
A Look at The NFC Competition:
- In their last time out the Sacred Heart Pioneers lost to the Yale Bulldogs 17-10.
- The foil squad went 6-3 against Yale and was led by a perfect 3-0 performance from Tyler Endee.
- Endee is having a very dominant season sporting a conference victory percentage for foil of 93.3 percent.
- New Hampshire has not been able to pull out a win in Northeast Fencing Conference play this season.
- Peter Bowers is leading the Wildcats in epee victory percentage in conference with 33.33%.
- Dartmouth is currently tied in the standings with the Brewers with one NFC win, having knocked off Tufts University 16-11.
- James Wen is leading the Big Green in foil victory percentage in conference with 66.7%.
- William Wolfe-McGuire and Josh Utterback each have seven sabre wins for the Big Green, while Nick Shade has won four of seven bouts in epee.
- The Terriers are still looking for their first Northeast Fencing Conference win of the season, with their closest loss coming in a 16-11 loss to UMass.
- Charles Ma is leading Boston University in sabre victory percentage in conference with 60 percent.
- Brandon Ng has the most wins in epee for the Terriers with five, with Kutay Ebiclioglu and Andrew Guguire have combined for seven NFC wins.
- UMASS is currently sixth in the Northeast Fencing Conference standings, sporting one win against Boston University. The score against the Terriers was 16-11.
- Daniel White is leading the Minutemen in epee victory percentage in conference with 40.0%.
- Bailey Michell has won seven of his 17 sabre matches for the Minutemen, while UMass's foil team has struggled to pick up victories, combining for just six wins in NFC action.
