NEW HAVEN, CT (February 4, 2017) – The Vassar College men's fencing team traveled to New Haven, CT on Saturday, taking on Yale University in action from the Payne-Whitney Gymnasium. Vassar was unable to pick up the win on its Ivy League opponent, dropping a 19-8 match with the Bulldogs.
Vassar did see some strong wins during the match though, as both the sabre and foil teams picked up three bout victories while the epee squad earned two wins on the Bulldogs. Freshman sabre fencer
Graeme Mills was 2-1 on the afternoon, upping his season win total to 51. Mills picked up a thrilling 5-4 win over Reed Srere, and also took down senior Ian Richards of Yale 5-0. Senior
Campbell Woods also picked up a win over sophomore Arthur Befumo.
In epee, junior
Jonathan Alperstein picked up a 5-2 triumph over junior Avery Vella. Senior
Ry Farley also had a thrilling match against sophomore Jonathan Xu, as Farley led until Xu rallied to take a 4-3 lead. The senior was not deterred though, as Farley came back to earn the 5-4 win.
The foil team picked up three wins on the day, as junior
Tom Racek chalked up a 5-3 victory over sophomore Daniel Flesch. Sophomore
Michael Skolnick finished his afternoon with a 5-2 triumph over sophomore Lance Chantiles, followed by a 5-3 victory for freshman
Noe Berger over Aiden Ahn.
Vassar will finish its Northeast Fencing Conference slate on February 11 at 10 a.m., taking on University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College, Boston University, Wellesley College, Sacred Heart University and the University of Massachusetts.
