NEW YORK (February 15, 2017) -- The Vassar College women's fencing team took on a pair of Top 10 teams in the CollegeFencing360.com Top 10 poll, falling to No. 2 Columbia University 26-1 before dropping a 16-11 decision to No. 10 New York University in action from Upper Manhattan and Columbia Fencing Room Wednesday evening.
The Brewers couldn't get much going against the No. 2 team in the nation, as sophomore
Rose Hulsey-Vincent knocked off Elise Gout 5-4 in foil. In sabre,
Annie Innes-Gold had a pair of really difficult defeats, dropping 5-4 bouts to senior Jessie Laffey and sophomore Llana Solomon.
In the evening match, Vassar fared much better, as VC picked up a squad win in foil with a 6-3 decision. Sophomore
Sophie Blumenstock knocked off Alisa Traskunov 5-3, and senior
Elsa Stoff picked up a 5-4 win over senior Cydney Williams. Blumenstock doubled her win total with another 5-3 win in round two, and
Mirit Rutishauser topped Traskunov 5-2. Stoff and Rutishauser would each pick up their second wins in the third round to give VC the 6-3 victory.
In epee, Hulsey-Vincent went 2-1 on the round, while
Sasha Czarnik knocked off Cyn Chau 5-2 in the second round of action. Innes-Gold would register a 2-1 record in sabre, defeating sophomore Maria Fee 5-3 in round one of action, and finished the match with a 5-3 decision over sophomroe Erika Levine.
Vassar will return to action on Sunday morning, hosting the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championships at 9 a.m. in Walker Field House.
