Last Time Out: The Brewers traveled to Providence, RI to compete in the first day of Northeast Fencing Conference, falling to Brandeis University, Boston College, and MIT, while knocking off Tufts University and Brown University. The win over Brown was Vassar's first ever victory over the Bears in school history.

A Look At The Brewers (19-12):

  • Vassar has been led in total wins this season by senior epee fencer Olivia Weiss, who comes into the weekend with a 60-23. She won 11 bouts last weekend at Brown.
  • The foil team for the Brewers has been very strong this season, going 173-106, while all three starters have 50 or more bout victories. Sophie Blumenstock leads the squad with 52 victories.
  • Sophomore Mirit Rutishauser has chalked up 51 wins on the season, and picked up seven wins at Brown a week ago.
  • Senior Elsa Stoff has continued her strong career as a senior, as she has won 66 percent of her bouts, chalking up 50 victories on the season in foil.
  • In sabre, freshman Stephanie Gull leads the squad with 44 wins, going 44-29 on the season including chalking up six impressive victories in the first day of NFC fencing.
  • Junior Annie Innes-Gold has set herself up to become NFC All-Star, as she has started the season 27-3 after missing the first semester of action studying abroad. She was 13-2 last weekend.
  • The sabre team is the only squad with four members of the squad with 20 or more wins this season, thanks to the efforts of Gull, Innes-Gold, Lilia Hutchinson and Arianna Hawk.
  • Sophomore Rose Hulsey-Vincent picked up six wins last weekend at Brown, and is second on the epee squad with 47 triumphs on the season.

A Look at The Bulldogs (11-5):

  • The Bulldogs had a tough time last Saturday going 1-5 overall at Penn State University. Yale fell to Columbia, Duke University, Penn State, Temple University and the University of North Carolina, while defeating Haverford.
  • Team captain and senior epeeist Katherine Miller noted the two heartbreaking matches against UNC and Temple that the Bulldogs lost on 5-4 losses at 13-13 as the most frustrating moments of the day.
  • Miller also swept against Duke, sophomore foilist Sarah Pak swept against UNC and sophomore epeeist Lucy Friedmann swept against Temple.
  •  The highlight of the day was certainly Miller's win against Penn State's Jessie Radanovich, the 2016 NCAA Champion in women's epee.
  • Joanna Lew finished 20th at the NCAA Championships last weekend in sabre, winning nine of her 23 bouts.
  • Sophomore Jenny Zhao also was 21st last year at the NCAA Championships in foil, and will be a tough test for the Vassar fencers.
  • Yale head coach Henry Harutunian was the 1996-97 USFCA Coach of the Year, had a distinguished career as a fencer and coach in his native Armenia. He was named eminent coach of the Republic of Armenia in 1963, while serving on the coaching staff for the Soviet national team from 1962-1966.

Up Next: The Brewers will be traveling to Medford, MA to face off against Smith College, University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College, Boston University, Wellesley College, Sacred Heart University, and University of Massachusetts in the second Northeast Fencing Conference match on Saturday, February 11.
