Win Over Brown Highlights First Day Of NFC Action From Women’s Fencing

PROVIDENCE, RI (January 28, 2017) – The Vassar College women's fencing team went 2-3 on Saturday afternoon in the first day for the Brewers in Northeast Fencing Conference action, but a huge win over host Brown University was the highlight of the day for Vassar, also knocking off Tufts University to finish Saturday's bouts.

Vassar dropped its first match of the day to Brandeis University 20-7, before suffering a heartbreaking 14-13 loss to Boston College. VC would get its first win ever over Brown in the next round, defeating the Bears 14-13, before dropping a 17-10 decision to Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Brewers finished in round six with a tight 15-12 win over the Jumbos of Tufts University.

In the opening round of action, the Brewers saw senior star epee fencer Olivia Weiss shine as she has all season. Against Brandeis, Weiss was 3-0 and junior Annie Innes-Gold was 2-1 overall. In a match with Boston College, the Brewer foil team was victories thanks to Elsa Stoff picking up three wins and Sophie Blumenstock earning two wins as well.

In epee, the Brewers again saw Weiss chalked up two more wins while sophomore Rose Hulsey-Vincent also earned a win. In sabre, Innes-Gold continued to dominate as she went 3-0 and freshman Stephanie Gull also picked up a victory against the Golden Eagles.

The first win of the day was a historic one for the Brewers, picking up their first win ever over the Bears of Brown University. VC won both the foil and epee weapons earned victories, as the epee group was once again strong. Weiss went undefeated against Brown, while Hulsey-Vincent also earned two wins as well. The sabre team got three wins from Innes-Gold, and Stoff and Mirit Rutishauser each won a pair of bouts in foil in the win.

In round five, the Brewers saw the sabre team have a strong match in going 6-3, but the MIT epee and foil fencers helped the Engineers outlast VC 17-10. Innes-Gold continued her bid for NFC All-Star honors with three more wins against MIT, while Gull was also 3-0 in sabre.

The Brewers would earn their second victory of the day over Tufts, as the foil team and epee group each collected squad wins. In foil, Stoff, Rutishauser and Blumenstock were each 2-1, while Weiss and Hulsey-Vincent also earned two wins in epee. The Vassar sabre team fell 5-4, but Gull and Innes-Gold each picked up two victories apiece. Innes-Gold finished 13-2 on the day, while Weiss went 11-4 for VC in epee Saturday.

VC will travel to Yale University next Saturday, February 4 at noon for a non-conference meet with the Bulldogs in New Haven, CT.
