Vassar Women’s Fencing Match Notes – Northeast Fencing Meet

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 27, 2017) – The Northeast Fencing Conference schedule has finally arrived for the Vassar College women's fencing team, who will travel to Brown University Saturday afternoon to take on Brandeis University, Boston College, host Brown and Tufts University. The Brewers are coming off a strong weekend last Saturday at the Cleveland State Duals, as VC earned wins in all six matches.

Last Time Out: The Brewer women upped their seasonal mark to 17-9 with the six wins last weekend at Cleveland State, highlighted by wins over the University of Michigan and Case Western Reserve University. Vassar earned at least 19 bouts in all six matches, including defeating Detroit-Mercy 27-0.
 
A Look At The Brewers:
 
  • Vassar saw strong showing from all three weapons last weekend, as the weapons squads went 18-0 on the day.
  • Freshman Stephanie Gull was 12-1 in sabre, upping her seasonal record to 38-21, while junior Annie Innes-Gold returned from abroad to go 14-1 in her first action of the season.
  • Junior Lilia Hutchinson picked up seven more wins for the sabre team, which pulled to nearly .500 on the season (117-118).
  • Vassar's foil team has been very strong this year, leading the team in total victories with 153 after its 47-7 mark in Cleveland.
  • Sophomore Sophie Blumenstock was 10-2 on the day to up her squad-best win total to 47, while Mirit Rutishauser chalked up a 12-2 mark.
  • Senior Elsa Stoff has also had a strong senior campaign, going 43-19 on the season, including a 9-2 mark at Cleveland State.
  • Freshman Victoria Majarali was 4-1 last weekend in foil for VC as well.
  • The epee team won 46 of its 54 bouts last Saturday, as sophomore Rose Hulsey-Vincent was 9-1.
  • Senior Olivia Weiss continued to rack up wins with an 8-2 mark at CSU, sitting with a team-best 49 victories going into conference action.
  • Last season, the Vassar women's team won seven Northeast Fencing Conference matches, and was 1-3 against the opponents it will face on Saturday. VC's lone win was a tight 14-13 win over Tufts.
A Look At The Opponents
 
  • The Brewers will take on the defending NFC women's champs in Boston College on Saturday, as well as the runner-up in Brandeis and fourth-place finisher from 2015-16 in Brown.
  • Brandeis will look to Liz Feller in the epee on Saturday, as she leads the team with 47 wins. Savannah Bishop and Dakota Levy will each also look to start for the Judges. Feller is second in the NFC with an 18-3 mark.
  • The Judges have a pair of foil fencers in the top five in win percentage right now in the NFC, as Joanne Carminucci and Jessica Gets have combined for 32 wins. Nina Styles is 42-12 in sabre to lead Brandeis in that weapon this season.
  • Boston College has one of the best epee fencers in the nation in Renee Bichette, who finished seventh at the NCAA Championships last year. She has won eight of her 10 league bouts so far this year.
  • Eagle sabre fencer Laura Donovan is 19-2 in NFC action to sit atop the Conference All-Star standings, while squad mate Gabrielle Chau is 16-4. Brooke Solsky has posted 14 wins in 17 NFC bouts this year.
  • The Brown Bears will lean on its strong foil team, led by Clarissa Allen and her 20-1 mark in conference fencing. Signe Ferguson is also first in the NFC in epee in win percentage with an 18-3 mark. Fellow epee fencer Sophie Ulene also has been strong.
  • The Tufts Jumbos will get their season underway on Saturday, having not fenced competitively in the fall semester. Tufts brings aboard eight new freshmen to the squad this season.
Up Next: The Brewers will travel to New Haven, CT next Saturday, February 4, taking on Yale University at noon in non-conference fencing action.
