Vassar Baseball Game Notes - Mount Saint Mary

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 20, 2016) – The Vassar College baseball team will look to continue its hot play of late, finishing a 15-game home stand on Wednesday afternoon against Mount Saint Mary College in action from Prentiss Field. The Brewers are riding high currently, having won its last five games including four contests against Rochester Institute of Technology this past weekend. Vassar averaged over six runs a game over the four wins against the Tigers.

A Look At The Brewers (15-15, 10-6 Liberty)
The Brewers have catapulted up the Liberty League standings thanks to their four wins this season, sitting a game behind Clarkson University for the top spot in the conference right now. Vassar currently has the fifth-best batting average in the conference, but has shown patience at the plate, earning the second-most walks and the most hit by pitches of any team in the Liberty League. The pitching staff for the Brewers have struck out 171 batters this year, fourth-most in the conference while VC's defense has been stout, fielding at a .957 clip this year which is third-highest in the conference.

Individually, Nick Johnson is fourth in the conference in batting average with a .383 clip while posting a Liberty League leading 13 doubles on the season. Last weekend, Johnson became the all-time leader at Vassar in two-baggers Saturday afternoon and his 62 total bases this season are fifth-most in the league. Matt Schwartz is 23rd in the conference in hitting with a .324 average, as he posted a walk-off single Saturday against RIT. Cory Wuenschell is in the top 20 in the conference in RBI with 19, and Mike Koscielniak has been on fire since his addition to the starting lineup, batting .405 over 13 starts. The bullpen has been anchored by junior Robert Winkelmann, who is 2-1 on the season while chalking up 19 strikeouts in 16 innings.

A Look At Knights (13-21, 7-6 Skyline)
Mount Saint Mary College lost its last two contests this past Sunday afternoon to Farmingdale State, but prior to that had knocked off Maritime College and Yeshiva University in a pair of doubleheaders. The Knights currently sit in fifth place within the Skyline Conference, sitting a game and a half behind Maritime for fourth place. Mount Saint Mary is posting a team batting average of .248 this season, while the pitching has allowed 6.31 runs per game.

Matt Cahill is leading the team in batting average and most offensive categories, as he is hitting .339 on the season with 41 hits, four doubles and a home. He is second on the squad with 15 RBI, while his slugging percentage is second only to the .451 clip from Blake Keegan. Keegan has a team-leading four triples this season, while starting 32 games for the Knights. Ryan Hayes is hitting .314 in his 51 at-bats this year, and Keegan has walked 28 times as well to post a .492 on-base average. Albert Estwick Jr. is also batting .266 with seven RBI. Ryan Turton has anchored the bullpen with a very strong 2.51 ERA in his 12 apperances, while James McCleary has also been stout in relief with a 2.84 ERA in 10 outings. Chris Wolfe and Kevin Duffy have combined to make 15 starts, and Stephan Sookdeo has also made 11 appearances out of the pen.

Against Mount Saint Mary All-Time
The Brewers have played their Hudson River foes 17 previous times before Wednesday, going 10-17 against the Knights. Vassar has won five of the last meetings, including a 7-5 victory back in 2014. Six of the last eight games have been played at Vassar College.

Other Brewer Notes: 
- Sophomore Bobby Kinne came back with a vengeance this weekend, as he hit .500 for the weekend in helping Vassar to a 4-0 record.
- Junior Robert Winkelmann came into game with authority on Sunday afternoon, striking out his first five batters he faced in a 2-0 win over RIT.
- Brooks English continues to walk his way into the record books for the Brewers, as he has 79 career walks, one behind Brett Zaziski (80) and five behind Tim Reinhardt for the all-time base on balls record.
- Jonathan Hong made his 26th career start on Saturday for the Brewers, which tied him for seventh all-time with Scott Allen. He is now just two starts behind Kristaps Aldins and Lawrence Flicker for fifth.
- Center fielder Denis Shanagher currently leads the team in runs scored with 23 runs, and is 10th in the Liberty League right now.
- Junior Adam Erkis is currently tied with Joe Lovizio for third all-time at Vassar with 10 complete games for his career, behind just Chris Beattie (12) and Quinn Robinson (20).
- Dakota Saganelli leads the conference in runners thrown out with 11, four more than Aiden Finch (ROC) and Devin Robson (SLU).
- Senior Connor Cucalon has nine saves for his career, the most ever at Vassar College.
- Pitcher Robert Winkelmann has 14 appearances is five shy of the single-season mark at Vassar, set in 2010 by former dominant southpaw flamethrower Race Bottini.
