Vassar Baseball Game Notes – RIT

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 20, 2016) – Vassar College looks to get back into conference play after a slew of non-conference contests. The Brewers went 1-3 over this stretch, falling 10-3 to the College at Old Westbury, 11-3 to Stevens Institute of Technology, and 1-0 in the first game against Western Connecticut State University. Vassar, however, dominated the final game of the non-conference stretch, beating Western Connecticut 17-5. This gives the Brewers momentum as they face off in a two double-headers, Sunday and Saturday, against the Rochester Institute of Technology.

A Look At The Brewers (11-15, 6-6 Liberty)
Vassar College has struggled a bit offensively as of late, as the team scored just seven runs inn the five games leading up to the final game against Western Connecticut State on Sunday.  The Brewers turned this drought around, however, in that final game as they scored 17 runs, opening the lead on their offensive production capabilities.

In this game, we saw Nick Johnson, who is hitting .394 on the season, post four hits, four RBI, and a run. Johnson now has 20 RBI for this year's campaign. Mike Koscielniak, batting .448 on the year, had a great game against Western Connecticut as well, with three hits and three runs in four at-bats. Further, Bobby Kinne had three hits, three runs, and two RBI and Brooks English had two knocks, a run and an RBI. Cory Wuenschell is aiding the Brewer offense this season with eight doubles and 19 RBI, both second to Johnson on the squad.

The Brewers pitching staff has had a few bright spots this season, as Trent Berg (5.01 ERA), Joe Conti (6.35 ERA), and Johnny Mrlik (6.82 ERA) have been all been solid parts of the lineup, going a combined 4-4. Adam Erkis has shown himself to be the Brewers ace, having a 3.32 ERA. He pitched in the first game against Western Connecticut on Sunday, holding the team to just one run and four hits.

A Look At Tigers (13-12, 7-5 Liberty)
RIT comes to Prentiss to take on the Brewers following a solid five-game stretch during which they finished 4-1. First, the Tigers went 3-1 in conference play at home against RPI. RIT followed this with a resounding victory over the College at Brockport, who they beat 11-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

In this huge win, RIT saw huge performances from Phil Sammon (3 RBI), Taylor Hogan (2 RBI), and Benjamin Terzini (2 RBI). Sammon leads the team in RBI with 23 and has an average of .337. Will Gorman is the only one to top this, batting .343 on the season for the Tigers and leading the team with 35 hits.

Mark Nozzi pitched phenomenally against Brockport, going four innings while just allowing three hits. He is yet to allow an earned run in his seven innings pitched this season. Other pitching leaders for RIT include: Brandon Cohall (2.45 ERA), Brett Bouchard (3.38 ERA), and Rory Little (3.63 ERA).

Against Rochester Institute of Technology All-Time
The Brewers lost their season series against RIT last year, falling in three out of the four games the two teams played. All-time, Vassar is 7-11 against the Tigers, having dropped four of the last five contests after winning five straight from 2012 to 2013.

Other Brewer Notes:
- Senior Nick Johnson tied the all-time doubles record on Sunday afternoon, posting his 48th and 49th two-bagger of his career. He needs one more double to eclipse the mark set by Brett Zaziski from 2011-14.
- Senior Brooks English is walking up on the all-time bases on balls record, as he is just four shy of Tim Reinhardt for the all-time record of 84. English has 80 for his tenure at VC, and 18 this season, tied for third in the Liberty League with teammate Eric Strickland.
- Junior Denis Shanagher is currently fourth in the Liberty League in stolen bases with 10.
- Right-hander Adam Erkis has the second-lowest ERA in program history currently, posting a 3.23 earned run average for his career.
- Senior Connor Cucalon became the all-time leader in saves at Vassar College with his second save of the season against Clarkson April 10.
- Vassar College is the only team without a balk this season on the mound.
- The Brewers have been hit 32 times this season, which is the most in the Liberty League.
- Every Vassar batter this season has at least two hits for the season, as Jake Doyle chalked up his first two career knocks this past weekend in the 17-5 thrashing of Western Connecticut.

Up Next
The Brewers will be facing off against Mount Saint Mary College on April 27 at Prentiss Field at 4 pm. to end Vassar's 15-game home stand.
