A Look At The Brewers (10-12, 6-6 Liberty)Vassar College goes into Wednesday's game having lost three of its last four in the series against Clarkson, just after taking three out of four against Skidmore. The one win against Clarkson was eked out 9-7 behind the bats of
Cory Wuenschell,
Dakota Sagnelli,
Matt Hernandez,
Mike Koscielniak, and
Nick Johnson, who all had RBIs. Many other players contributed as well, in fact all but one of the Brewers' starters had a hit in that game. The offense was held down though on Monday afternoon, and Clarkson's lineup scored seven or more runs in each game of the series, an impressive feat.
Nick Johnson increased his tally of hits to 31 over the series, although his average dropped below .400.
Cory Wuenschell increased his RBI total to 16, tying Johnson for the team lead.
Denis Shanagher is approaching double digits in the steal column with nine steals currently. On the pitching side, the series took a toll on much of the team's ERA.
Robert Winkelmann did get his first win of the season, although it was off of a relief appearance. He only gave up one run in 2.1 innings. Pitcher
Connor Cucalon notched his second save of the season, pitching a scoreless 1.1 innings. These are the sort of performances that Vassar's pitching staff needs to replicate against Old Westbury.
A Look At The Panthers (17-9, 6-0 Skyline)Old Westbury is coming into the matchup against Vassar this Wednesday right on the heels of a four-game winning streak, including a double header in which they clobbered Yeshiva University, taking the first game 22-1 and the second 17-0. There's no question that this team is hot right now, and they'll be looking to continue their streak against the Brewers. This team is stacked with great hitters. Five of the six Old Westbury hitters with 70 or more at-bats are slugging over .500, and all six are hitting over .300. Jesse Russo and Tommy Ziegen are tied for the league lead in hits with 38 each, and Ziegen also has two home runs, 9 doubles, and 27 RBIs on the season.
The Panthers have managed to put up similarly gaudy numbers on the opposite side of the ball, sporting a team ERA of 3.55. Opposing hitters have been held to an average of .240, while the staff has only allowed three home runs all season.
Other Brewer Notes:- Sophomore
Eric Strickland's on base streak was finally broken on Monday (after he failed to reach base in the day's first game), but not before he extended it to 20 games this year.
-
Nick Johnson could beat Strickland's streak before the season is over, as he extended his own on-base streak to 11 games over the series.
-
Trent Berg recorded eight strikeouts in his appearance on Monday, boosting his total on the season to 25, which leads the team.
- Freshman
Matt Schwartz maintained his average of .333. Although Schwartz has seen limited appearances this season, when he has been on the field he's been very productive.
-
Mike Koscielniak extended his hitting streak to five games, which is the longest current hitting streak on the team. He'll be looking to extend that streak even further in Wednesday's game.
- Vassar still has eight games left in its record 15-game home stand after this Wednesday's contest, meaning that the team will have plenty more opportunities to take advantage of its home field advantage. So far they're 2-4, but the Brewers will be looking to improve on that in the coming games.
-
Brooks English comes into Wednesday's affair seven walks shy of the all-time record at Vassar College.
- With his double Monday afternoon in game two,
Nick Johnson moved to within three of the all-time double record at Vassar College. Johnson has 46 for his tenure, three behind Brett Zaziski '14.
Up NextThe Brewers will continue their 15-game home stand on Saturday afternoon, hosting the Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. on Prentiss Field.
