POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 17, 2016) – The Vassar College men's fencing team will continue its home stretch on Sunday morning, hosting the 2016 Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational, which will also serve as Senior Day for the four seniors on the squad. VC is coming off a great day at the Vassar Invitational last weekend, going a perfect 8-0 for its best start in program history.

Last Time Out: The Brewers had a great start to the dual match season last weekend at the Vassar Invitational, going 8-0 against some strong teams in Walker Field House. The Brewers saw the sabre team go 54-18 on the afternoon, while the new and improved foil squad chalked up a 59-13 record.
A Look At The Brewers:
- Vassar was paced last weekend by junior foil fencer Tom Racek, who went 17-2 on the day. Racek is coming off a 61-27 season last year as a sophomore.
- Freshman sabre fencer Graeme Mills was strong as well, as he paced his squad with 17 wins in 20 bouts. Mills was 3-0 against Haverford and Incarnate Word.
- Freshman Jack Holmes burst onto the scene last Saturday, going 16-1 in his 17 bouts, as he finished the day on a 15-match win streak.
- Junior Jonathan Alperstein picked up right where he left off as a sophomore, as he posted 16 wins over four losses last Sunday. Alperstein won two or more bouts in seven of the eight matches.
- Both the sabre and foil teams had three members chalk up 10 or more wins on the afternoon.
- Vassar knocked off the University of Incarnate Word 19-8 on Sunday, as the Cardinals came into the match receiving votes in the final CollegeFencing360.com Top 10 poll.
- Freshman Noe Berger was also strong at foil for Vassar to start the season, as he was 13-4 including winning three bouts against Drew University to end the day.
- Senior Campbell Woods comes into the day on Sunday with a seven-bout winning streak, having gone undefeated against Incarnate Word and Drew University.
- The men's sabre squad went 9-0 against Yeshiva and Incarnate Word, while the foil team followed suit with blankings of Hunter, Lafayette and West Point.
- Junior Daniel Swerzenski was 9-6 on the day, but fought off a nasty cut in Round 8 against Drew to earn a 5-4 win.
A Look At The Competition:
- Vassar has won the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational the past seven years, and lost just 15 bouts in the 2015 title run.
- VC will welcome club teams from RPI, RIT, the University of Florida and Cornell University, while Drew University will also be in attendance.
- The Brewers fenced Drew last weekend earning a 21-6 win over the Rangers.
- VC defeated Cornell last year 27-0, while knocking off RPI 22-5 in the Matt Lampell. VC also defeated Marist 26-1 and RIT 21-6 in action last season.
Up Next: Vassar will have its biggest test of the season after Thanksgiving, as the Brewers travel to Sacred Heart to fence the likes of No. 5 Penn State University, No. 7 Princeton University, No. 8 Harvard University, NYU and the host Pioneers December 4 at 10 a.m. in Fairfield, CT.
