NEW HAVEN, CT (January 30, 2016) – The Vassar College women's fencing team traveled to the Nutmeg State on Saturday afternoon, taking on Ivy League opponent Yale University. The Brewers battled hard, but couldn't pick up the non-conference win over the Bulldogs, falling 17-10 from the Yale Fencing Salon.
The Brewer women's sabre team went 2-7 on the afternoon, as sophomores
Arianna Hawk and
Annie Innes-Gold each earned victories. Hawk's win was very impressive, as she knocked off Ilana Kamber, who finished 23
rd at the NCAA Championships last year.
In women's foil, the Brewers dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to the Bulldogs, led by the fencing from sophomore
Kirsten Denman. The star sophomore chalked up three wins for the Brewers, while
Sophie Blumenstock also earned a win to add to her ledger.
In women's epee, Vassar College almost added a squad win, but again were just edged by the Bulldogs with a 5-4 score. Junior
Olivia Weiss registered two victories on the day, while
Rose Hulsey-Vincent and
Rachel Messbauer each added wins of their own.
The Brewers will return to action next Saturday afternoon at Smith College, finishing Northeast Fencing Conference competition with five more matches.
