CLINTON, NY (January 16, 2016) – The Vassar College women's swimming and diving team traveled to Hamilton College and Bristol Pool Saturday for a pair of dual meets, but dropped both in falling to hosts Hamilton 183-115 along with a 164-133 loss to Rochester Institute of Technology.
Swimming at the same time but having the matches scored as if the other team wasn't there was the task at hand for Vassar Saturday, coupled with what was its second meet in the last 48 hours. That, along with what has been a long few weeks training in Florida, could be attributed to the final scores though head coach
Lisl Prater-Lee was quick to note the positives.
"We've been training as one bigger group since January 3 and we have accomplished a lot," said Prater-Lee. "We knew this meet would be a challenge but we were able to keep it in perspective, find some smaller (and sometimes larger) victories in our races and diving. If we can do these things when tired, we can be great when we are tapered and fresh."
Freshman
Sammy Stone was once again the lead standout for the Brewers in the pool, as she racked up another pair of wins to go with a second-place finish as well. Stone took the 1000 meter freestyle by more than 30 seconds with a 10:46.10, while cleaning house in the 200 yard IM with a 2:15.28, nearly six seconds better than Lauren King of Hamilton. Stone also showed her sprint speed in the 100 free, posting a 55.77 for second-place.
Senior
Milee Nelson continued her strong meet performances with a second-place finish in the 100 yard back with a 1:05.09, while rebounding well to achieve the fastest 100 yard fly split of the day at 1:04.96. Along with Stone in the 100 free, senior
Lily Frye posted a solid in-season swim with a time of 57.49. The 200 breaststroke saw Vassar go 2-3 in the event, as
Hayley Schultz was second with a 2:36.21 while senior
Anna Kuo took third after swimming a quick 2:36.98.
The trio of divers for Vassar continued to shine on the boards, going 2-3-4 in the 1 meter diving event.
Mia Moraru was second to Natalie Snyder of RIT with a 232.35, while Nora Kyrkiebo followed in second with a 211.70 and
Maya Pruitt added a third-place score of 208.50 to narrowly defeat Hamilton's Sarah Pickup.
In the 3 meter dive, the order stayed the same for the Brewers, as Moraru posted 239.45 points, Kyrkiebo chalked up 205.90 and teammate Pruitt finished with 204.85 points. In other action,
Marie Schmidt was fourth in the 1000 free with a time of 11:27.51 and fourth in the 500 free with a 5:35.08. Kuo also tallied a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke after swimming a 1:11.62.
The Vassar women's 400 free relay finished the day with a strong time of 3:54.00, which included a 56.96 split from Stone to anchor the relay.
The Brewers will return to the pool to compete in the Seven Sisters Championships next Saturday and Sunday, heading to Wellesley College for the two-day affair in Wellesley, MA.
