POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 31, 2012) -- The Vassar College men's tennis team jumped out to a 4-1 lead against the Intercollegiate Tennis Association No. 21 Swarthmore, but the Garnet won the bottom four singles matches to prevent the upset with a 5-4 win on Saturday indoors at Walker Field House.
With the match even at 4-4, Christian Carcione completed Swarthmore's comeback with a tight 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Vassar's
Josh Kessler at No. 6 singles.
The Brewers (9-7, 4-1) host New York University on April 13 at 1:00 pm. The Garnet (8-7, 1-0) face McDaniel in Centennial action on April 3 at 4:00 pm.
The Brewers took a 2-1 lead at the break with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. On break point for Vassar at No. 2 doubles,
Kartik Kapoor was pushed into the back corner on a deep volley and hooked a forehand winner over the post to put Vassar ahead 5-2. Swarthmore's Max Kaye and Carcione picked up a break to pull within 5-4 but Kapoor and
Dan Freeman settled in and traded games to stay up a break at 6-5. Freeman held serve for a 7-5 lead and Vassar closed the match 8-6 on Kapoor's serve with an emphatic putaway volley by Freeman.
At No. 1 doubles against Zak Kelm and Max Bressman, the ITA No. 6 ranked pair of
Ben Guzick and
Andrew Guzick kept the match on serve but played from a game behind until converting the crucial break at 7-7. Swarthmore's approach volley popped up off the tape and after a bounce,
Ben Guzick brushed a sharp-angled forehand passing shot for an 8-7 Vassar lead.
Ben Guzick served out the match 9-7 to give Vassar a 2-0 lead.
Swarthmore claimed the third doubles point as Anthony Collard and Daniel Park defeated
Nick Jasso and
Wilson Platt 8-5.
Vassar took a 3-1 lead as
Andrew Guzick routined Kelm 6-2, 6-3.
Ben Guzick followed with win over Collard 6-1, 7-5 for a 4-1 Vassar lead.
The Garnet pulled within 4-3 with wins at No. 4 and No. 3 singles, leaving only No. 5 and No. 6 singles to decide the match. Vassar needed one win and Swarthmore needed both wins.
The Brewers seemed to be in good shape as Kessler owned the first set 6-2 against Carcione at No. 6 and Platt stole the first set against Preston Poon, 7-6, in a thrilling 12-10 tiebreaker at No. 5.
Poon rebounded to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-3 and even the score at 4-4, leaving the third set at No. 6 to decide the match.
Carcione dashed Vassar's hopes of an upset with a tight 6-4 win in the third set.
