WEST POINT, NY (February 12, 2012) – For the fourth time in history, the Vassar College men's tennis team faced Division I Army, producing several very close matches in  6-1 loss to the seven-time defending Patriot League Champion on Sunday at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.

Army swept the three doubles matches to earn one point – per Division I rules – and won five of six singles matches. In a battle of brothers at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions, Vassar's Andrew Guzick had hopes of an upset against Army's Alex Van Velzer at the No. 1 position with a 6-3 win in the first set, but Van Velzer rallied for 6-4 and 6-1 wins in the second and third sets.

At the No. 2 position, Donald Van Velzer took the first set 7-5 but Ben Guzick evened the score with a 7-2 win in the second set tiebreaker. Guzick was dominant in the third set super tiebreaker with a 10-3 win.

The Brewers (3-1) face Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on the road on February 18 at 12:00 p.m. The Black Knights (3-2) face Ball State and Lipscomb on the road on February 18.

In a dramatic match at No. 3 doubles, Vassar's Nick Jasso and Wilson Platt traded holds with Army's Andrew Clark and Chad Llewellyn all the way to a tiebreaker at 7-7. At 4-3, Army picked up a mini-break on a double fault by Platt for a 5-3 lead. A put-away volley by Jasso cut the Army lead to 5-4.

Army went up 6-4 on its serve but Vassar fought off a match point as Jasso hit a low slice return that Army netted. Down match point once more at 6-5, Jasso delivered a big first serve that went unreturned to even the score at 6-6. Army went up 7-6 after an exchange at net and then Clark served it out for Army, winning 8-6 with a drop volley that led to a put-away.

At No. 1 doubles, brothers Andrew Guzick and Ben Guzick went down 7-2 to Asika Isoh and Henry Jang-Milstein, and worked the score to 7-4 before falling 8-4. Dan Freeman and Kartik Kapoor fell 8-1 to Army's Alex Van Velzer and Donald Van Velzer.

At No. 6 singles Kartik Kapoor went down 6-4 to Rashad Shelton and gutted out an 8-6 win in the second-set tiebreaker. Shelton prevailed 10-5 in the third set super tiebreaker for Army's sixth point.
In the series history, Army defeated Vassar 7-0 in 1993, 7-2 in 1977, and 9-0 in 1976.
