COLLEGE PARK, PA (December 6, 2011) – The Vassar College women's fencing team competed at a prestigious meet at Penn State last weekend, and used the national caliber competition as a building block for the rest of the season.
The Brewers went 0-6 in the competition and are 10-11 on the season. Vassar will be back in action next on January 22 with with a home match against Marist College, Cleveland State University, and University of Detroit-Mercy at Walker Field House.
Vassar's outstanding fencer on the day was Katie Leclair, who finished the day with a record of 11-6.
Veronica Weser was next at 7-11.
Round 1 – Vassar 4 Temple 23
Leclair got the only foil win, but Weser,
Victoria Weiss, and
Noelle Sawyer were each able to get a win in Epee.
Round 2 – Vassar 10 NYU 17
Epee went 4-5 against the Violets. Weser had three victories in this round.
Round 3 – Vassar 7 UNC 20
Foil came alive in this round with Leclair undefeated and
Elizabeth Ilechko going 2-1 for a 5-4 squad victory. Unfortunately Epee and Sabre were flat with only one win each from Weser and
Tracy Bratt.
Round 4 – Vassar 6 PSU 21
Leclair was undefeated 3-0 against the 11 time national champion squad. .
Brooke Schieffer has a great round at 2-1.
Anastasia Stevens earned an epee win as well.
Round 5 – Vassar 2 Harvard 25
Harvard dominated with Vassar's only two wins one each from Weser and Leclair.
Round 6 – Vassar 4 Princeton 23
Leclair finished the day strong at 2-1. Schieffer and Weser each picked up one win.
