Andrew Fischl ’11 Wins Gold At Pan American Fencing Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (June 9, 2014) – Former Vassar College men's fencer and NCAA Honorable Mention All-American Andrew Fischl '11 earned Gold in men's team sabre at the 2014 Pan American Fencing Championships recently, held last Friday in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Fischl, who is arguably the most successful fencer ever at Vassar College, has fared well on the international scene since his departure from VC. The team comprised of Fischl, Jeff Spear, Andrew Mackiewicz and Geoffrey Loss defeated the Dominican Republic, 45-26, after a bye into the quarterfinals.

The squad would breeze by Mexico in the semifinals for a 45-18 win, and barely nipped the Canadian squad 45-42 to earn the gold medal. "Andrew was a team captain in 2011…it's great to see that he is now achieving such great success on the international stage. We may even see him in Rio (2016 Olympics) in two years," said head fencing coach Bruce Gillman.
