MADISON, N.J. - The Vassar College Women's Fencing team placed sixth at the 2023 EWFC Championships at Drew University while three fencers earned all-conference status in the individual competition.
Vassar earned a 26-1 victory over Yeshiva in round one as sabre and foil each went undefeated. Freshman
Vanessa Mark and sophomore
Kira Wheeler each went 3-0 at sabre while freshman
Abigail Geiger added two wins and sophomore
Olivia Salva recorded a win. Senior
Sophie Jones, junior
Hunter Grogan and sophomore
Nicole Ezell scored three victories apiece at foil. Sophomore
Naomi Hirsch and freshman
Aanya Mukherjee went undefeated at epee along with two victories by senior
Carter Mucha.
The Brewers tallied their second win in round two by a 26-1 decision over CCNY. Mark and Geiger both were undefeated at sabre along with two wins from Wheeler and one for Salva. Grogan was 3-0 at foil while Jones and Ezell each had two wins and sophomore
Isabel Stowe tallied a victory. At epee, sophomore
Danielle Golden, Mucha and Mukherjee all went undefeated for Vassar.
Vassar recorded a 20-7 victory in round three against Hunter as Geiger, Mark and Wheeler all scored two victories at sabre while Ezell and Grogan each went 3-0 at foil and Jones added two wins. Sophomore
Addy Xie was undefeated at epee as Hirsch added two victories and Mucha tallied one win.
The Brewers dropped its first contest 14-13 in round four against Drew. Geiger was 3-0 at sabre while Wheeler scored two victories and Mark added one along with Grogan winning twice at foil and Ezell tallying a win. Xie and freshman
Sarah Boucher-Rowe each scored two wins apiece at epee for the Brewers.
Vassar fell in round five 16-11 to Stevens as Geiger led the way with three wins at sabre along with two wins from Wheeler. Grogan earned the lone win at foil while Golden tallied two wins at epee along with a win each from sophomore
Olivia Barnes and Boucher-Rowe.
In the fifth place match against Denison, Vassar fell 17-10 with epee earning eight wins as the group was led by Boucher-Rowe's three wins and two wins from Xie and then one apiece from Mucha and Barnes. Grogan and Ezell tallied a win each at foil.
Denison earned the top spot in the sabre standings, Johns Hopkins was first in the foil standings and Drew was the top team in the epee standings.
Johns Hopkins took the overall team victory followed by Drew in second place and Wellesley finished in third place.
In the individual competition, Wheeler finished seventh overall in sabre and was named second team all-conference while Geiger finished in 13th overall. At foil, Grogan was third overall and tallied first team all-conference honors while Jones was 14th overall. In the epee competition, Hirsch was tied for ninth place and received second team all-conference honors while Mucha tallied a 12th overall finish.
