Women's Fencing Battles at NEIFC Big One

Barnes finishes second overall in epee

NORTHAMPTON, MA - The Vassar College Women's Fencing team opened the 2023-24 season at the NEIFC Big One as junior Olivia Barnes finished second overall in epee out of 61 total competitors.

EPEE RESULTS
  • Barnes
    • Barnes scored five victories in pool #8 as she tallied wins over Smith, Bowdoin, Northeastern, UMass and UNH.
    • The junior was seeded 11th overall and defeated Erin Feeney (URI) and Isabel Aldort (Smith) to advance to the round of 16.
    • Barnes then upset #6 Andrea Leang (MIT) and #3 Julia Lin (Dartmouth) to advance to the final four.
    • Barnes advanced to the championship match after defeating #18 Priscilla Leang in the round of four before falling #4 Feland 15-11.
  • Sophomore Sarah Boucher-Rowe
    • Boucher-Rowe opened up pool #1 with a 5-1 record, scoring victories over fencers from MIT, Northeastern, New Hampshire, Smith and Rhode Island.
    • The sophomore earned the 13 seed in the single elimination and defeated Brooke Podlipec (WPI) and Lilah Flynn (UNH) in the first two rounds.
    • Boucher-Rowe fell in the round of 16 to MIT's Zandra Feland 15-10.
  • Junior Danielle Golden
    • Golden scored four victories in pool #9 as she defeated fencers from Smith, UNH and Norheastern.
    • The junior was seeded 17th overall and defeated Bianca Hanly (MIT) in the first round.
    • Golden fell to teammate Mukherjee 15-12 in the round of 32.
  • Sophomore Aanya Mukherjee
    • Muhkherjee finished with a 5-1 record in pool #7 as she defeated fencers from UNH, Sacred Heart, Northeastern, WPI and Smith.
    • The sophomore was ranked 16th overall and earned victories over Katie Denisenko (URI) and Golden before falling to top-seeded Nadia Gaberkorn (Sacred Heart) 15-8.
  • Junior Addy Xie
    • Xie also posted a 5-1 record in pool #6 with victories over Smith, UMass, URI and Boston University.
    • The junior scored the 12th seed in the bracket as Xie scored three straight wins over Katherine Growney (Northeastern), Sam Paffenroth (WPI) and upset #5 seed Venkata Reddy Parinitha (UMass).
    • Xie fell in the round of eight by a slim margin of 15-14 to #4 Feland.
FOIL RESULTS
  • First year Zoe North
    • North finished 4-2 in pool #1, tallying wins over Smith, UNH and Sacred Heart.
    • The first year was seeded 16th overall as North defeated Lauren Macias (Mount Holyoke) and #17 Elle Yurkstas (Sacred Heart) before falling in the round of 16 to top-seeded Amber Peng (MIT).
  • First year Aurelia Cacace
    • Cacace scored three wins in pool #7 as she defeated fencers from Mount Holyoke, UMass and Smith.
    • The first year was ranked 27th before falling to Sacred Heart's Samantha Syrek.
  • Junior Nicole Ezell
    • Ezell tallied three victories in pool #3, winning matches against UNH, Dartmouth and Mount Holyoke.
    • The junior earned the 29 seed and defeated Chen Liu (Boston University) before dropping a match to #4 Amelia Schuppert (MIT).
SABRE RESULTS
  • Sophomore Abigail Geiger
    • Geiger went 4-1 in pool #7 as the sophomore defeated Smith, UMass and Boston University.
    • The sophomore earned the 12th seed overall and defeated Lala Rukh (Smith) to advance to the round of 16.
    • Geiger fell in the round of 16 to #5 Valery Krylova (Sacred Heart) 15-7.
  • Junior Kira Wheeler
    • Wheeler scored four wins in pool #5 over fencers from UNH, MIT, Smith and UMass.
    • The junior was ranked 13th overall and defeated Kimmy Swift (Smith) before dropping to #20 Alyssa Stone (MIT) 15-14.
  • Sophomore Vanessa Mark
    • Mark put together two wins in pool #1 against fencers from Smith and Boston University.
    • The sophomore was ranked 34th and reached the round of 32 before falling to #2 Anna Mikulevica (MIT).
