Women's Fencing Fences At Cleveland State Invite

Vassar goes 2-3 overall in the first meet of 2023

CLEVELAND, OH - The Vassar College Women's Fencing team traveled to Cleveland, Ohio for its first meet of 2023 on Sunday as the Brewers went 2-3 at the Cleveland State Invitational. VC's epee squad had the top mark at 30-15 on the day while the foil squad recorded a 24-21 record and the sabre squad went 20-25 overall.

In the first round, Vassar took a hard fought 12-15 loss to Denison but the epee squad took a 8-1 bout victory and were led by three wins apiece from freshman Sarah Boucher-Rowe and sophomore Addy Xie. Freshman Aanya Mukherjee also picked up two victories for the Brewers at epee. Junior Hunter Grogan earned the lone victory at foil for Vassar while freshmen Abigail Geiger and Vanessa Mark and senior Chloe Gjoka each picked up a win at sabre.

The Brewers suffered a 10-17 defeat in round two to the host Cleveland State. Geiger picked up the two victories at sabre for Vassar along with Grogan winning twice at foil and sophomore Nicole Ezell earned a win at foil. Boucher-Rowe won twice at epee along with one victory apiece from sophomore Naomi Hirsch and Mukherjee. Vassar responded with a 25-2 victory over Detroit Mercy in round three as Mark and Geiger went undefeated at sabre and Gjoka tallied two victories. Ezell, Grogan and senior Sophie Jones all went 3-0 at foil and senior Carter Mucha along with Hirsch went 3-0 at epee. Mukherjee also added two wins at epee for the Brewers.

In round four, Vassar were edged out in a 13-14 loss to Lawrence as Boucher-Rowe went undefeated at epee and sophomore Danielle Golden and Mucha each tallied two victories. Grogan recorded two wins at foil along with Ezell tallying the other win for the squad. Geiger earned two victories for the sabre squad while Mark added a win. 

The Brewers concluded the day with a 14-13 victory over Incarnate Word and were led by a 7-2 foil bout win. Grogan went undefeated at foil and Jones and Ezell each won twice. Sophomore Olivia Barnes and Hirsch earned two wins apiece at epee while Gjoka, Geiger and Mark tallied one win each at sabre to earn the victory for Vassar.

Vassar returns to action next weekend at the second Northeast Conference Multimeet at Boston College. The meet against the Eagles, Tufts, MIT, Drew, Brandeis and Brown will begin at 10:00 a.m.
