NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Vassar women's fencing team faced stiff competition against NYU and number two seed Columbia at the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet on Wednesday evening. The Brewers put forth a good showing against some of the best fencers in the country, going 10-17 against NYU but falling 2-25 to Columbia.
In the first round against NYU, the women's foil squad tacked on three victories, with sophomore
Zoe Tolbert (Olympia, WA) accounting for two of them and sophomore
Tori Lubin (Westport, CT) picking up the third. Freshman
Jenna Waibel (Pompton Lakes, NJ) also fenced well, losing a close 5-4 bout against NYU's Rachel Yuen.
The saber squad won another three bouts behind an excellent showing by junior
Rose Parker (Westfield, NJ), who went 3-0. Freshman
Elise Poniatowski (West Roxbury, MA) and junior
Barsha Saha (Elmhurst, NY) also fenced, but they fell to NYU's challenging saber squad.
Vassar's women's epee squad fenced a close round against NYU, totaling 4 out of 9 victories. Sophomore
Chloe Chinnadurai (Denville, NJ) led the squad, winning two bouts, while sophomore
Rosie Parker (Portland, OR) and freshman
Carter Mucha (Brookline, MA) each added on another victory.
The next round, against Columbia University, proved tough for all squads. The women's foil squad managed two victories, with Tolbert and Lubin each winning one bout. Waibel lost another close 5-4 round against Columbia's Rachel Zhang.
In women's saber, Poniatowski won 3 out of 5 touches against Anika Tsapatsaris, and in women's epee, Parker lost a tight 5-4 bout against Lee Ann Choy.
This wrapped up the season's dual meets; the Brewers are back in action this Sun. Feb. 16 at Hunter College for the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Championship.
