NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Vassar men had a strong showing against NYU and number-one seed Columbia University at the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet on Wednesday evening. Against some of the United States' top-ranked fencers, the Brewers went 9-18 against NYU and 8-19 against Columbia.
In the first round, the men's foil squad beat NYU 5-4, with junior
Adlai Brandt-Ogman (South Salem, NY) and senior
Noe Berger (Brooklyn, NY), each winning two out of three of their bouts. Sophomore
Caleb Klein (Chappaqua, NY) added another victory.
Vassar's men's epee squad brought in another two victories, with junior Mike Jaklitsch (St. James, NY) and sophomore
Nishay Bhatnagar (Livingston, NJ) tacking on one win each.
The men's saber squad also tallied two victories behind wins from junior
Evin Heintz (Pearland, TX) and senior
Graeme Mills (Boston, MA). Mills also managed four touches against NYU's Grant Williams.
In the second round, the epee squad gained three victories against the Lions. Junior
Abram Gregory (North Smithfield, RI), freshman Alex Moyse (Montclair, NJ), and Jaklitsch each added a win, and senior
Roman Guglielmo (New York, NY) lost a tight 5-4 bout to Columbia's Peter Ko.
The Brewers' saber squad went 1-8, with Heintz accounting for the victory. Mills also earned four touches against Columbia's Christopher Walker.
Men's foil fought hard and won 4 out of 9 bouts, only losing to Columbia by one bout. Brandt-Ogman had a strong result, winning two bouts against the Lions, while Klein and Berger won one bout each.
This was the final dual meet of the season, and the Brewers will fence again at home on Sat. Feb. 22 for the Northeast Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Championship held in Walker Field House.
