MEDFORD, MA – Seven members of the Vassar women's fencing team recorded double-digit wins on Sunday's Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) Multimeet held at Tufts University. The Brewers went 5-2 on the day, defeating UMass (18-9), Dartmouth (26-1), Smith (22-5), Sacred Heart (18-9), and New Hampshire (20-7). The only losses came to Boston University (12-15) and Wellesley (7-20).
All weapons recorded winning records, but it was foil pulling off an impressive 52-11 record on the day. Sabre went 38-25, while epee went 33-30.
Sophomore Zoe Tolbert (Olympia, WA) led all Brewers with a 21-0Â foil record, while Tori Lubin (Westport, CT) went 17-3. Jenna Waibel (Pompton Lakes, NJ) tallied a 15-5 foil record. At sabre, Rose Parker (Westfield, NJ) led Vassar at 15-6, and Elise Poniatowski (West Roxbury, MA) went 13-8. Chloe Chinnadurai (Denville, NJ) topped the epee team at 14-7, while Carter Mucha (Brookline, MA) boasted 11 victories.
Vassar opened against UMass, sweeping foil 9-0 and besting sabre 7-2. The trio of Tolbert, Waibel, and Lubin all cruised to 3-0 foil marks. At sabre, Parker also went 3-0, with Poniatowski and Jenna Hutchinson (Omaha, NE) going 2-1. Epee fell up 2-7.
In the second round, the Brewers were tripped up by the Terriers. Vassar took the foil field 8-1 but was slipped up 1-8 at epee and 3-6 in sabre. Tolbert and Lubin posted 3-0 marks, while Waibel went 2-1. Parker tacked on two sabre victories.
In round three, Vassar picked up the 26-1 win over Dartmouth. Vassar won 9-0 by Dartmouth forfeits in sabre and epee, but went 8-1 at foil. Tolbert and Lubin kept their winning streaks alive, both going 3-0, while Waibel went 2-1.
Vassar continued to roll, defeating Smith 9-0 at foil, 7-2 in sabre, and 6-3 in epee. Tolbert and Lubin recorded their 12th wins in a row at foil. Parker and Poniatowski also went 3-0 at sabre, with the epee group of Chinnadurai, Breanna Piercy (Knoxville, TN), and Mucha all going 2-1 in epee.
Momentum did not carry over until the next round, as the Brewers fell 7-20 to Wellesley. Sabre swept Vassar 9-0, while Wellesley's foil won 6-3, and epee went up 5-4.
The Brewers bounced back with an 18-9 victory over Sacred Heart. Foil led again at 8-1 behind 3-0 sweeps from Tolbert and Waibel. Sabre saw the Parker, Poniatowski, and Hutchinson each go 2-1, while Chinnadurai led epee with two wins.
Vassar wrapped up the day with a solid 20-7 win over New Hampshire. Both foil and epee won 7-2, and sabre went 6-3. At foil, Tolbert went 3-0, with Waibel and Lubin going 2-0. Chinnadurai and Mucha closed out undefeated as well, both going 3-0. At sabre, Parker, Poniatowski, and Barsha Saha (Elmhurst, NY) all went 2-1.
Vassar now heads to New York City to face Columbia and NYU on Feb. 12. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
