Swimming & Diving Post Road Sweep at Montclair State

Brewers men win, 152-146; VC women capture 171-122 decision

MONTCLAIR, NJ - The Vassar men's and women's swimming & diving teams took to the water for their final dual meet of the season, facing-off against Montclair State on the road. It was an exciting finish for both squads, but the men in particular as they earned the win in the last relay to beat the Red Hawks, 152-146. The Brewers women picked up a solid 171-122 win on the evening.

The victories move the Vassar men to a 7-3 mark overall, while the women move to 10-1 on the season in dual meet action.

Action opened with the VC women taking second in the 200-medley relay as juniors Rhea Randhawa and Stephanie Kaplan, along with rookie Lillian Lowenthal and sophomore Violet Witchel combined for a time of 1:53.96, just getting edged out of first place (1:53.62) by the Red Hawks.

On the men's side, freshmen Nick D'Arrigo and Anthony Cheng, along with senior Harrison Taylor and junior Max White earned second in the event with a combined mark of 1:42.53.

Next up was the 1000-free as junior Angharad Healey posted the win in a time of 11:05.07, while the men's side was won by rookie Robbie Perot as he touched the wall in a time of 10:07.55 for victory.

Lowenthal then earned the win in the 200-free as she posted a time of 2:04.93, while Randhawa took third with a mark of 2:08.26. In the men's event, White was second overall with a time of 1:47.19 - just a fraction off the winning time (1:47.05).

In the 100-backstroke, sophomore Jesse Ecklund was victorious in a time of 1:00.31, while the men's side sophomore Duncan Webber earn third in a time of 58.93. Kaplan then took third in the 100-breast with a mark of 1:12.52, while the men's event saw Cheng finish second (1:01.78), senior Matthew Imiolek take third (1:06.04), followed by junior Danny Dunn in fourth (1:10.32).

The Brewers' women went 1-2 in the 200-butterfly, paced by winner Grace Myers as she notched a time of 2:16.11. She was followed by junior Brynn Lautenbacher, who had a mark of 2:20.01. The men's 200-fly was won by sophomore Jake Mier as he touched the wall in a time of 1:59.17.

In the 50-free, the Brewers women once again shined as rookie Sophie Forbes earned second (26.03), classmate Abby Whittington took third (26.07), while Witchel was fourth (26.14). The men's side also saw a 2-4 sweep as sophomore Nikolas Pham was runner-up (23.22), followed by sophomore Brandon Li and Perot in third (23.52) and fourth (24.18), respectively.

Vassar's divers also had tremendous success, beginning in the 1-meter as rookie Evelyn Boyle earned second with a score of 112.35 points. The men's event saw sophomore Sam Murphy take second as well with a mark of 152.55 points.

Following the opening event of diving, the swimmers returned to the pool and Ecklund shined with her second win of the evening, this time in her signature event as she posted a time of 2:10.80 in the 200-back. Randhawa was close behind in second with a mark of 2:13.62. The men's event was paced by D'Arrigo as he touched the wall in a time of 2:03.33, while sophomore Ethan Skuches was third with a mark of 2:06.29.

The 200-breast was won by Kaplan on the women's side as she posted a time of 2:34.17, while the men's event saw Cheng victorious in a time of 2:13.88. A pair of repeat winners took center stage in the 500-free as Lowenthal won the women's side in a time of 5:27.62, while Perot was the men's victor with a mark of 4:55.36.

Key points were once again earned in the next diving event as Boyle once again took second with a score of 201.80 points on the women's side, while the men's event was won by Murphy. He notched a winning score of 226.35 points to claim victory.

Back to the pool following the conclusion of diving and Lowenthal and Perot once again added a victory to their impressive night as each won the 200-IM race. Lowenthal posted a time of 2:16.93 in the women's event, while Perot won the men's with a mark of 2:03.57.

In the final event of the evening, the 200-free relay, Vassar's top women's relay of Witchel, Forbes, Lautenbacher and Ecklund were the winners with a combined time of 1:41.47, while the men's side proved to be the meet decider. Li, Imiolek, Pham and White powered their way through to victory with a  winning mark of 1:28.89.

Vassar's squads return to the pool on Saturday when they host the Vassar Sprint Invitational at Kresge Pool. In addition to the Brewers, SUNY Cobleskill, SUNY Delhi, Skidmore and Bard will also be in attendance. Action begins at 1pm with a Senior Day celebration be
