CHESTNUT HILL, MA – The Vassar women's fencing team opened Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) competition at Saturday's multimeet held at Boston College. Against the challenging competition, the Brewers went 0-5.
The foil squad amassed a 27-18 record, with freshman Jenna Waibel (Pompton Lakes, NJ) leading all Brewers with a 10-5 foil record. Sophomore Zoe Tolbert (Olympia, WA) went 9-6, while sophomore Tori Lubin (Westport, CT) was 8-7. Vassar's epee team picked up 16 wins on the day. Chloe Chinnadurai (Denville, NJ) led the squad, winning eight bouts. Sophomore Rosie Parker (Portland, OR) and freshman Carter Mucha (Brookline, MA) each had four victories. The Brewers sabre squad struggled at the meet, picking up two wins from Elise Poniatowski (West Roxbury, MA).
Vassar opened against MIT, dropping a 9-18 decision. The foil team won 5-4 behind 2-1 victories by Tolbert and Waibel. Epee was tripped up 4-5 with Mucha going 2-1. In the next round, Vassar lost 11-16 to Tufts. The foil team had this best victory of the meet, going 8-1 against the Jumbos. Both Tolbert and Waibel recorded 3-0 sweeps, while Lubin went 2-1. Unfortunately, epee fell 2-7, and sabre went 1-8.
Foil led again in the third round against Boston College, winning 6-3, but Vassar dropped the match 8-19. The trio of Lubin, Tolbert, and Waibel all went 2-1. Epee and sabre matched the previous round's records, going 2-7 and 1-8, respectively. Â
The Brewers lost 9-18 to Brandeis the following round. Vassar's epee squad picked up their first win of the day, going 5-4 against the Judges. Chinnadurai went 3-0, and Parker and Mucha added wins.
Vassar closed out in a hard match against Brown, losing 7-20 to the Bears. Chinnadurai managed to add two epee victories in the loss.
Vassar travels to New Haven, CT, next for a duel match against Yale on Sat. Feb. 1 at 11:30 a.m.
