Vassar Goes Undefeated At VC Invitational

Sophomore Zoe Tolbert Posts 10-0 Foil Record

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar women's fencing team opened 2020 with an impressive 4-0 day on Sunday at the Walker Field House. The Brewers opened 17-10 against Cleveland State and then downed Detroit Mercy 20-7. Vassar rematched both squads, going 16-11 over the Vikings and 19-8 with the Titans.

The foil group led Vassar at 29-7, while epee went 23-13, and sabre posted a 20-16 record. Sophomore Zoe Tolbert (Olympia, WA) led Vassar, earning a perfect 10-0 record at foil, while sophomore Rosie Parker (Portland, OR) tallied a 10-1 epee mark. Including Tolbert and Parker, seven Brewers posted six or more victories.

Freshman Elise Poniatowski (West Roxbury, MA) led sabre with an 8-4 record, while junior Rose Parker went 7-5 in her return from studying abroad. All the foil fencers recorded winning records. First-year Jenna Waibel (Pompton Lakes, NJ) was 6-4, while sophomore Tori Lubin (Westport, CT) went 7-3. After Parker, sophomore Chloe Chinnadurai (Denville, NJ) earned six victories while Carter Mucha (Brookline, MA) had five.

In the opening match against the Vikings, Vassar was led by a 7-2 foil performance that included 3-0 sweeps by Tolbert and Waibel. Epee and sabre both were 5-4. Parker and Poniatowski went 2-1 at sabre, and epee got by Cleveland State from a 3-0 performance by Parker.

Momentum carried over into the second round, as Vassar rolled past Detroit Mercy 20-7. Foil kept strong at 8-1, and epee went 7-2. Sabre slipped by at 5-4. Tolbert and Lubin went undefeated at 2-0, while Parker continued her winning streak with a 3-0 sweep in epee.

Vassar saw a closer match against Cleveland State the second time around but still won 16-11. Foil won 7-2 again, and sabre downed the Vikings 5-4. Epee dropped a 4-5 decision. Tolbert won 3-0, and Waibel and Lubin went 2-1. Chinnadurai and Parker tacked on two victories each at epee. In sabre, Parker and Poniatowski also had two wins apiece.

The Brewers closed out with a 19-8 win in the second bout with Detroit Mercy. All weapons posted winning records with foil and epee both going 7-2. Sabre went 5-4.

Vassar returns to action on Sat. Jan. 25 for the Northeast Conference Multi Meet #2 held at Boston College.
