BOSTON, Mass. – The Vassar women's fencing foil squad recorded four clean sweeps as the team went 7-0 at the NFC meet on Saturday.
Vassar started the day by defeating the UMass 12-10 before edging Boston University 14-13. The Brewers rolled in their next two matches, downing Dartmouth 22-5 and then defeating Smith 23-4. Avenging last season's losses, Vassar defeated Wellesley 16-11 and bested Sacred Heart 19-8. The squad finished strong by cruising past New Hampshire 22-5.
In a close first round, Vassar edged the Minutemen behind two tight 5-4 epee and sabre bouts. Foil had a solid outing, going 7-2 behind 3-0 performances from
Sophie Blumenstock and
Mirit Rutishauser. For epee,
Rose Hulsey-Vincent dropped her first bout, but rebounded for two-straight wins, while
Chloe Chinnadurai also went 2-1.
Rose Parker and
Nicoletta Dinelli tallied two sabre wins to sneak past UMass.
The second round was another close one. Vassar swept the Terriers foil squad, but dropped an 8-1 decision in epee. The Brewers fell 5-4 in sabre, but the strong foil squad kept the narrow win. The trio of Rutishauser, Blumenstock and
Zoe Tolbert went 3-0 in foil, while Chinnadurai tallied the only epee victory. Dinelli and Parker had two wins apiece against Boston for sabre.
Vassar finally got to relax in the next few rounds, starting with a solid 22-5 victory over Dartmouth. Foil had its second 9-0 sweep in a row, while epee bounced back at 8-1. The sabre field edged the Big Green 5-4. The same three foil Brewers tallied sweeps, and
Rosie Parker went 3-0 in epee. Hulsey-Vincent and
Shannon Chen both had two victories. Dinelli and Parker then tacked on two wins each at sabre. Vassar then dominated Smith in the fourth round, winning 13-4 with a third 9-0 sweep at foil.
The Brewers picked up a big win over Wellesley in the fifth round. Foil went 7-2 with Tolbert and Blumenstock going undefeated. At epee, the Brewers were 6-3, led by Hulsey-Vincent's 3-0 performance. Wellesley's sabre squad pulled off the 6-3 sabre victory, but Dinelli managed two wins.
Foil led again against Sacred Heart, going 9-0. Sabre went 8-1, while epee slipped, falling 7-2 to the Pioneers. Blumenstock, Tolbert and Rutishauser tallied the foil sweep. Sacred Heart only had one sabre fencer, but Parker, Dinelli and
Barsha Saha picked up a win each.
In the final round, Vassar bested New Hampshire 22-5. Foil did not keep its undefeated streak going, but was 8-1 against the Wildcats. Epee was 6-3 and sabre went 8-1. Lubin and Rutishauser led foil with 3-0 marks, while
Vera Jin tacked on two victories. Chinnadurai led the epee squad at 3-0, while
Breanna Piercy added two wins in her first bout of the day. Sabre wrapped things up with Parker and Dinelli sweeps, while
