TROY, NY – Despite a number of solid performances, the Vassar College women's and men's swimming and diving teams shouldered tough losses on the road at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Saturday at Robison Pool. The Engineers women squeaked past the Brewers with a 150-149 win, while the RPI men bested Vassar by a 189-106 margin.
The meet opened with a win by Vassar in the women's 200-meter relay as the foursome of juniors Rhea Randhawa and Stephanie Kaplan, along with freshmen Lillian Lowenthal and Sophie Forbes combined for a winning time of 1:51.70.
In the men's event, the Brewers group of sophomores
Ethan Skuches and
Nikolas Pham, along with seniors
Harrison Taylor and
Matthew Imiolek earned third overall with a mark of 1:42.15.
Junior Angharad Healey posted second overall in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:19.79, while sophomore Kendall Hayes was right behind with a mark of 11:24.22. In the men's event, freshman
Robbie Perot continued his dominance of the 1000 event, earning the win with a time of 9:57.60.
Rookie Grace Myers was the winner in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 1:59.99, while junior Brynn Lautenbacher was second overall with a time of 2:03.16. On the men's side, junior
Max White took second with a time of 1:46.88.
The 100-yard backstroke saw sophomore Jesse Ecklund take the win, touching the wall in a time of 59.04, just ahead of RPI's Megan Beaulieu, who posted a time of 59.30. In the men's event, rookie
Nick D'Arrigo was fourth in the men's event with a time of 58.15.
Kaplan earned runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.27, while on the men's side, Pham was fourth with a mark of 1:03.17.
Lowenthal grabbed the victory in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:11.41 and sophomore
Jake Mier was second in the fly with a time of 2:00.62. The 50-free was up next as Lautenbacher earned second with a time of 25.93. On the men's side, Imiolek was third with a time of 22.90.
Diving was up next as the women's 1-meter saw freshman Evelyn Boyle earn fourth with a score of 162.55 points. The men's 3-meter saw sophomore
Laurence Barr-Forget take third with a mark of 124.05 points.
Back in the pool, Myers and Whittington went 2-3 in the 100-free with times of 55.72 and 56.16, respectively, while the men's side saw White earn second with a time of 49.84.
Ecklund dominated once again in the 200-back, earning the victory with a time of 2:08.12, while Randhawa was third in a time of 2:11.52, just fractions of a second out of runner-up (2:11.47). The men's 200-back saw D'Arrigo finish second (2:04.75), followed by Skuches in third (2:05.02) and rookie
Leroy Wang in fourth (2:19.16).
Lowenthal earned her second win of the day in the 200-breast, posting a time of 2:31.30, while rookie
Anthony Cheng was runner-up on the men's side with a time of 2:16.52.
Ecklund went on to earn runner-up in the 500-free with a time of 5:31.22, while Perot was the victor on the men's side with a time of 4:51.39.
In the 100-fly, the Brewers' women went 1-2 as Lautenbacher and Myers posted times of 1:01.63 and 1:03.33. The men's event was paced by Taylor, who had a time of 55.13, followed by Imiolek in third with a time of 58.81.
Diving took center stage once again with Boyle finishing fourth in the 3-meter event with a score of 154.90 points. On the men's side, sophomore
Sam Murphy took third in the 1-meter with a score of 153.70, followed by Barr-Forget in fourth with 123.70 points.
In the 400-yard individual medley, Lowenthal earned her third individual win of the day, posting a top time of 4:41.17, while Healey and Randhawa were third (4:49.17) and fourth (4:49.30), respectively. The men's event saw Mier take second with a time of 4:27.66, followed by D'Arrigo and Skuches in third (4:30.90) and fourth (4:31.46).
The final event of the night – the 200-free relay – saw the Brewers' women dominated with a winning time of 1:39.82. That foursome was comprised of Whittington, Lautenbacher, Ecklund and Forbes. On the men's side, White, Wang, Taylor and Pham combined for a time of 1:32.30 to finish second overall.
Both Vassar squads are back in action next Friday when they host New Paltz and Franklin & Marshall at Kresge Pool. Meet time is set for 5pm.
