Vassar Splits At Northeast Conference Multimeet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Vassar women's fencing squad posted three victories at Saturday's Northeast Fencing Multimeet at Brown University. The Brewers opened with wins against MIT and Tufts, and then downed Rhode Island in the final round.

Against MIT, Vassar won 16-11, led by 7-2 marks in both the foil and epee. Freshman Zoe Tolbert (Olympia, WA) and Mirit Rutishauser (New York, NY) recorded 3-0 sweeps in the foil. Sophie Blumenstock (St. Paul, MN) fell in her first bout, but bounced back for a 2-1 victory. Rose Hulsey-Vincent (Woodinville, WA) led the epee field with three wins, while Chloe Chinnadurai (Denville, NJ) and Rosie Parker (Portland, OR) each tallied two victories. Sabre fell 7-2 with wins from Rose Parker (Westfield, NJ) and Nicoletta Dinelli (Talent, OR).

In the second round, the Brewers defeated Tufts 17-10. Vassar edged the Jumbos 5-4 in the foil and rolled 8-1 in epee. Tufts had the 5-4 advantage in sabre. Tori Lubin (Westport, CT) led foil this time, going 3-0. Chinnadurai and Parked picked up sweeps in the epee. Dinelli and Parker then both had 2-1 records in the sabre.

Vassar fell in the next three rounds to Brandeis (15-12), Boston College (18-9) and Brown (17-10). The Brewers had a solid 6-3 victory over BC's foil squad. Tolbert picked up another sweep, while Blumenstock went 2-1. Boston had the epee and sabre advantage, pulling off the 6-3 and 9-0 wins.

In a closely fought fourth round, Brandeis used a strong foil squad to edge the Brewers. Hulse-Vincent went 3-0 in epee, while Chinnadurai was 2-1.

After falling to Brown, Vassar rebounded in the final round to defeat Rhode Island 17-10. Foil led with an 8-1 victory and epee was 6-3. Sabre fell 6-3 to the Rams. Tolbert and Lubin led the foil field, both at 3-0. Vera Jin (Tianjin China, China) also had a solid 2-1 performance. Both Parker and Shannon Chen (Westford, MA) went 2-1 against the Rams in epee. Dinelli led the sabre squad with two wins.

Vassar travels to New Haven, CT next to face Yale on Sat. Feb. 2. Matches are set to start at noon.
