Vassar Baseball Game Notes – Clarkson

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 12, 2018) – The Vassar College baseball team, coming off an improbable four-run, ninth-inning rally to knock off Williams College Wednesday, will now look forward to four Liberty League games at home vs. Clarkson University Friday and Saturday from Prentiss Field. The four-game set was scheduled to be played in Potsdam, but the games were moved to Poughkeepsie due to weather concerns.

Last Time Out: The Brewers rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the top of the ninth Wednesday, turning a four-run deficit into a four-run lead with eight runs in the frame to knock off Williams College 10-7. It was Vassar's highest ninth-inning output to come back in a game in the records available. Bryan Rubin was 3-for-5, while Matt Hernandez and Jake Doyle each had two hits apiece.
 
A Look At The Brewers (10-7, 6-2 Liberty)
 
  • Vassar has been strong defensively this season, franking first in the conference in fielding percentage at .974, 12th nationally. VC is also 15th in the country in double plays per game with 1.00.
  • Senior Bobby Kinne is having a great game, ranking first on the team in hitting with a .412 clip. He is also one of just two players nationally that qualifies for the national rankings to have not struck out this season.
  • Junior Bryan Rubin has hits in his last nine games, including a pair of three-hit performances as he has raised his average to .372 for the season.
  • Vassar is 6-1 at home this season, going 5-1 in conference action on Prentiss Field.
  • The Brewers have had seven different pitchers start games this year, while sophomore Max Spencer is the only person with four or more starting assignments.
  • Senior Matt Hernandez comes into the weekend eighth all-time in assists at Vassar with 219 for his career.
  • Freshman Logan Willans has tossed 15.1 innings out of the bullpen this year, allowing just one earned run while punching out 12.
  • Sophomore Mitchell Mullock has a 3.46 ERA over 13 innings in three starts this season, surrendering just five runs while walking just two batters.
  • Junior Joe Conti has started two game for Vassar, going 2-0 with a 0.84 ERA over 10.2 innings, as batters are hitting a paltry .184.
  • Vassar has not played in Potsdam against Clarkson since the 2012 season, and only 18 of the 53 games played with the two teams have been in North Country.
 
A Look At The Golden Knights (5-9, 0-4 Liberty):
 
  • Clarkson got swept by Union College last weekend in Amsterdam, NY, but knocked off Plattsburgh State 3-2 Tuesday at home.
  • The Golden Knights come into the weekend hitting .265 as a team, seventh in the Liberty League, while slugging a league-low .327.
  • Clarkson as a staff has a 5.24 team ERA, and is allowing hitters to bat .317 for the season.
  • CU is led by Brad Pearson, who is batting .407 in 14 games, leading the team with 22 hits and 13 runs driven in.
  • Vincent Granuzzo is second on the team in hitting with a .368 batting average, while Will Coleman is also batting .327 for the Golden Knights.
  • Andrew Smith last started three games for CU, posting a team-high 19 innings on the hill, while chalking up a 4.26 ERA.
  • Coleman has a 1.93 ERA for the season over two starts, while Mike Bubniak and Rory Corcoran each earned starts against Union College.
 
Against Clarkson All-Time: Vassar is 12-41 all-time against the Golden Knights, losing the last three games and eight of the last nine. The only meeting last year was in the Liberty League Tournament, an 11-1 win for CU.
